Physicochemical properties of nanosized biochar regulated by heat treatment temperature dictates algal responses: From the perspective of fatty acid metabolism

Yichao Huang et al.

Summary: Nanosized biochar (NBC) is an important fraction of biochar (BC), and its effects on aquatic organisms are attracting increasing research attention. However, the effects of different physicochemical properties of NBC on biological responses are not well understood. In this study, the effects of NBCs pyrolyzed at different heat treatment temperatures on freshwater algae were evaluated. The findings reveal the underlying mechanisms in the algal response to NBCs and provide valuable guidance for the safe design and application of BC materials.

Are human exposure assessment the same for non-persistent organic chemicals? -from the lens of urinary variability and predictability

Man Deng et al.

Summary: Assessment of human exposure to mixtures of non-persistent chemicals requires accurate characterization and estimation of preceding exposure levels, and assessment sampling approaches remain disputable. This study used a targeted method to quantify urinary concentrations of 59 common non-persistent chemicals in consecutive spot samples from 11 participants. The results showed that certain chemicals had high reproducibility, while others had low reproducibility, suggesting that different sampling approaches may be needed for different chemicals.

Quantitation of linear and branched perfluoroalkane sulfonic acids (PFSAs) in women and infants during pregnancy and lactation

Kristin Varsi et al.

Summary: This study investigated differences in branched and linear PFSA isomers in pregnant women, postpartum women, and infants. The results showed a linear relation between maternal PFSA concentrations during pregnancy and the concentrations in infants at age six months. The study found significant variability in PFSA burden among mothers and infants, with reduced maternal transfer of branched PFHxS isoforms and increased transfer of branched PFOS isoforms to the infants compared to the respective linear isoforms. These findings may have implications for adverse health effects associated with PFSA exposure.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substance (PFAS) exposure, maternal metabolomic perturbation, and fetal growth in African American women: A meet-in-the-middle approach

Che-Jung Chang et al.

Summary: Prenatal exposure to per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) is associated with reduced fetal growth in pregnant African American women. High-resolution metabolomics analysis revealed perturbations in amino acid, lipid and fatty acid, bile acid, and androgenic hormone metabolism pathways as potential mechanisms linking PFAS exposure to fetal growth restriction. Uric acid was identified as a potential intermediate biomarker in this relationship.

A review of environmental metabolism disrupting chemicals and effect biomarkers associating disease risks: Where exposomics meets metabolomics

Jiachen Sun et al.

Summary: The exposure to environmental toxicants can lead to metabolic diseases, such as diabetes and obesity, through disturbances in key metabolic and signaling pathways. Research on metabolism disrupting chemicals (MDCs) becomes important to understand these risks. Various contaminants like EDCs, heavy metals, and emerging substances have been linked with metabolic disorders, highlighting the need for further studies on combined effects and metabolic alterations for better toxicity assessment and public health management.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances in the environment

Marina G. Evich et al.

Summary: PFAS has become a symbol of environmental contamination, attracting public, scientific, and regulatory concern. These compounds are globally distributed through atmospheric and aqueous releases, and they accumulate in biota through multiple pathways. Efforts to remediate PFAS-contaminated matrices are still in their early stages, with a focus on research targeting drinking water.

Summary: The article discusses the status of PFAS in Brazil, including its classification as persistent organic pollutants, import and export data, and domestic trade data. The study finds that although listed PFAS are present in Brazil, there is a lack of research on the topic, indicating a need for strategies to increase stakeholder engagement and reinforce control over PFAS trade.

Maternal exposure to bis(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate during the thyroid hormone-dependent stage induces persistent emotional and cognitive impairment in middle-aged offspring mice

Jia Lv et al.

Summary: This study found that prenatal DEHP exposure can have lasting effects on offspring neurobehavior, including anxiety, depression, and cognitive impairment. The results suggest that these effects may be caused by damage to the fetal brain's thyroid hormone signaling system due to DEHP exposure.

Lipidomic biomarkers: Potential mediators of associations between urinary bisphenol A exposure and colorectal cancer

Xu Hong et al.

Summary: This study found a higher level of bisphenol A (BPA) in the urine of colorectal cancer (CRC) patients compared to controls, and a positive correlation between BPA and CRC biomarkers. Lipidomic screening revealed significant perturbation in the glycerophospholipid metabolism pathway, which contributed to the association between BPA exposure and CRC. These findings contribute to a better understanding of the etiology of CRC induced by environmental stressors.

A High-Throughput Toxicity Screen of 42 Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS) and Functional Assessment of Migration and Gene Expression in Human Placental Trophoblast Cells

Bevin E. Blake et al.

Summary: Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are widespread environmental contaminants associated with adverse pregnancy outcomes. This study investigated the effects of 42 unique PFAS on human placental trophoblast cells and found that the placenta is a direct target of PFAS exposure. Even at levels below the cytotoxicity threshold, PFAS disrupted gene expression and function in trophoblast cells. Further research is needed to understand the mechanisms of PFAS action on placental trophoblasts.

Concentration, spatial distribution, and health risk assessment of PFASs in serum of teenagers, tap water and soil near a Chinese fluorochemical industrial plant

Lin-Na Xie et al.

Summary: Discharges from fluorochemical industrial plants cause severe contamination of the environment with PFASs, posing risks to human health. The study found that PFOA was predominant in serum of local teenagers, and concentrations of PFCAs in soil and serum were associated with the industrial plant. Although PFOA concentrations in tap water were not relevant to the plant, potential health risks through the soil via food chain should be monitored.

Systemic PFOS and PFOA exposure and disturbed lipid homeostasis in humans: what do we know and what not?

Styliani S. Fragki et al.

Summary: The association between PFOS/PFOA and increased blood lipids in humans has been observed, while rodent studies show opposite effects, likely due to different exposure levels. Mechanistic research suggests that PFOS/PFOA activate the PPAR alpha pathway in human liver cells, but the involvement of other nuclear receptors is less clear. Future studies focusing on human-relevant test systems are needed to better understand the implications of PFOS/PFOA exposure on lipid homeostasis and human health.
