An upwind generalized finite difference method (GFDM) for meshless analysis of heat and mass transfer in porous media

Xiang Rao

Summary: This paper develops an upwind GFDM method for coupled heat and mass transfer problems in porous media. It demonstrates that this meshless method can obtain a stable upwind effect for solving convection-diffusion equations. The upwind GFDM is more practical and stable for porous flow problems compared to manually adjusting the influence domain.

Jun Lei et al.

Summary: A novel space-time generalized finite difference method has been developed for solving dynamic coupled thermoelasticity problems, where the velocity is introduced as an additional unknown field quantity in the numerical implementation. The accuracy of this method has been verified through numerical analysis of dynamic coupled thermoelasticity problems in different loading cases in homogeneous or heterogeneous plates.

Where to drill next? A dual-weighted approach to adaptive optimal design of groundwater surveys

Mikkel B. Lykkegaard et al.

Summary: We propose a novel approach to adaptive optimal design of groundwater surveys. Our method, based on Bayesian Optimization and goal-oriented error estimation, selects the next monitoring well by considering available data from existing wells. Unlike other optimal design strategies, our approach does not rely on Fisher Information but utilizes posterior uncertainty and the solution to a dual problem to construct an acquisition function. We demonstrate its effectiveness in a 2D groundwater flow example, where it outperforms the baseline approach in reducing the error in the posterior estimate of the quantity of interest.

An upwind generalized finite difference method for meshless solution of two-phase porous flow equations

Xiang Rao et al.

Summary: This paper introduces the use of upwind GFDM for meshless solution of two-phase porous flow equations, utilizing node clouds for discretization and employing moving least square approximation and local Taylor expansion for spatial derivatives approximation. The study identifies two sources of calculation error and emphasizes the importance of symmetry or uniformity in node allocation in the node influence domain for accuracy of generalized difference operators. The research highlights the significance of small radius in the node influence domain to achieve high calculation accuracy, distinguishing it from elliptic problems when GFDM is applied.

Uncertainty of heterogeneous hydrogeological models in groundwater flow and land subsidence simulations-A case study in Huwei Town, Taiwan

Duc-Huy Tran et al.

Summary: The distribution of hydrogeological materials in a three-dimensional heterogeneous aquifer system has a significant impact on groundwater flow and land subsidence simulations. Investigating and quantifying the uncertainty of hydrogeological models is essential for reliable assessment. By analyzing and simulating geological borehole data, valuable uncertainty information regarding groundwater flow and land subsidence can be obtained.

Summary: This study evaluates the impact of cement degradation on stress distribution in composite well systems using thermal-mechanical modeling. The results show significant changes in tensile hoop stress and radial stress due to cement degradation. Therefore, time-varying material properties should be considered when evaluating the integrity of cement sheaths in supercritical CO2 sequestration environments.

Uncertainty quantification of radionuclide migration in fractured granite

Sida Jia et al.

Summary: The study developed an integrated statistical framework for quantifying the uncertainty associated with radionuclide migration in geological disposal of high-level radioactive waste. Global sensitivity analysis identified fracture aperture, matrix diffusion coefficient, hydraulic gradient, and dispersivity as the most sensitive parameters. Post-processing of Monte Carlo simulations was applied to conduct statistical analysis of risk metrics, with an average breakthrough time for radionuclides at 1000 m ranging between 85 and 331 thousand years.

Summary: In this study, we used the MEs-EnKF approach to investigate the relationship between conductivity estimates and the type of available hydraulic head information in a heterogeneous groundwater field. Our results show that monitoring wells of Type A provide the best quality estimates, while Type B and C wells yield similar quality estimates. Additionally, inflating the measurement-error covariance matrix can improve conductivity estimates in simplified flow models.
