Inelastic Response of High-Rise Buildings under Strong Winds: Accuracy of Reduced-Order Building Model and Influence of Biaxial Response Interaction

Jinghui Huang et al.

Summary: This study examined the accuracy of a reduced-order building model approach for inelastic response analysis of tall buildings under simultaneous actions of both alongwind and crosswind loadings. The results demonstrate the accuracy of the reduced-order building model and highlight the challenges faced in the estimation of time-varying mean component of inelastic response.

A framework for the efficient reliability assessment of inelastic wind excited structures at dynamic shakedown

Wei-Chu Chuang et al.

Summary: The introduction of performance-based wind engineering has opened up possibilities in designing wind excited structural systems with controlled inelasticity. This paper presents a stochastic simulation-based reliability assessment framework for assessing the reliability of structural systems at dynamic shakedown. The study shows that there is a significant increase in reliability at dynamic shakedown compared to component and system first yield.

Reliability-based design approach for high-rise buildings subject to earthquakes and strong winds

Xiao-Wei Zheng et al.

Summary: This study presents a reliability-based approach to improve the accuracy of load modification factors for designing high-rise buildings in earthquake and strong wind-prone regions. Various uncertainties are considered, and a reliability-based design method is used to account for the effects of earthquakes and strong winds. The study ultimately determines the load modification factor through the proposed procedure, offering a practical method to design high-performance structures against various hazards in the future.

Performance-based wind-induced structural and envelope damage assessment of engineered buildings through nonlinear dynamic analysis

Zhicheng Ouyang et al.

Summary: This study focuses on investigating the severity, dependency, and occurrence rates of structural and envelope damage in extreme wind events for engineered buildings, using a newly introduced PBWE framework, fragility analysis, and nonlinear finite element formulation. The research includes a case study of a 45-story steel building in Miami, FL, subjected to hurricane winds to analyze probabilistic damage metrics and discuss relative severity, occurrence rates, and nonlinear structural behavior.

Performance-Based Assessment and Structural Response of 20-Story SAC Building under Wind Hazards through Collapse

Azin Ghaffary et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the performance of a 20-story steel moment-resisting frame under different wind speeds, showing that the building meets performance targets and was intentionally underdesigned. The study suggests that current code methods may lead to overly conservative designs and recommends incorporating performance-based approaches and controlled nonlinear responses for safer and more economical designs.
