High-strength high-ductility Engineered/Strain-Hardening Cementitious Composites (ECC/SHCC) incorporating geopolymer fine aggregates

Ling-Yu Xu et al.

Summary: The geopolymer fine aggregates enhance the tensile ductility and crack width of high-strength ECC, reacting and bonding strongly with the cementitious matrix to create saturated multiple cracking and excellent tensile ductility. This study opens up a new avenue for the development of high-performance fiber-reinforced cementitious composites based on artificial geopolymer aggregates.

Precast system and assembly connection of cement concrete slabs for road pavement: A review

Mingjing Fang et al.

Summary: This paper provides an overview of precast pavement systems and assembly connections of concrete slabs, as well as the features of precast pavement. Previous research suggests that both the super-slab and Michigan systems have satisfactory road performance, and flexible base materials are recommended for leveled and stress-distributed fabricated pavement. To prevent voiding, secondary leveling using materials such as sand cushion, dry mixed mortar, or self-leveling mortar can be applied. Two-direction dowel bars are recommended for slab connections to improve load transfer capacity and durability. Additionally, sealing treatments for precast slab joints need enhancement to minimize the impact of surface runoff. Future research should focus on designing functional, composite, mechanized, intelligent, lightweight, and flexible pavement slabs, and understanding the mechanical properties induced by temperature overlapping traffic loads.

The bond properties between ultra-high-performance concrete and normal strength concrete substrate: Bond macro-performance and overlay transition zone microstructure

Shuo Feng et al.

Summary: This study investigates the bond performance between ultra-high-performance concrete (UHPC) and normal strength concrete (NSC) substrate. A hoop constraint method is designed to assess the shrinkage effect of repair materials on bond macro-performance. The results indicate that the hoop constraint method effectively reflects the ability of UHPC to overcome significant shrinkage and achieve good bond performance. Moreover, the UHPC-combined substrate exhibits better bond strength and a more compact repair interface than NSC.

Characteristics of compressive stress around dowel joint in concrete pavement system

Jiachen Guo et al.

Summary: This paper proposes two modifications to improve Friberg's theoretical analysis on the dowel bar-concrete interaction in jointed plain concrete pavement (JPCP) system. The modifications consider the elastic deformation of concrete support and the sinusoidal contact stress distribution. The effectiveness of these modifications is validated through finite element analysis. In addition, the paper investigates the maximum compressive stress at the joint surface by studying relevant parameters. Finally, a flow chart summarizing the differences between Friberg's theoretical analysis and the modified method is presented.

Experimental and numerical study on the structural performance of the stainless steel ring strengthened removable dowel bar connection system

Jiachen Guo et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a removable dowel bar connection system to address the issue of traditional jointed plain concrete pavement (JPCP) systems not being reusable after grouting fast-setting materials in the dowel slot. By applying a stainless steel ring at the pavement joint surface, the severe stress concentration in JPCP systems is mitigated. The effect of the stainless steel ring on the structural performance of the removable dowel bar connection system is studied, and a close relationship between the ultimate load and the stainless steel ring length is found through parametric analysis.

Stainless steel ring strengthened removable dowel bar connection system: Effect of key parameters and design recommendations

Jiachen Guo et al.

Summary: This paper numerically studies key parameters that affect the structural performance of the stainless steel ring strengthened removable dowel bar connection system. It finds that the dowel bar diameter, the stainless steel ring length, and the stainless steel ring thickness have important influences on the system performance.

Experimental study of the shear behaviour of concrete-grout-concrete joints

Yong Zhao et al.

Summary: This study examined the effect of grouting thickness and interfacial shear reinforcement ratio on the shear behavior of grouted sleeve connections through monotonic and cyclic loading tests. The results showed that specimens with a thinner grouting layer or with a larger ratio of shear reinforcement have a higher shear capacity. The shear transfer mechanism of the new type of joint was proposed based on the extended friction shear model and a modified shear capacity calculation model was established.

A Review of Developments and Challenges for UHPC in Structural Engineering: Behavior, Analysis, and Design

Chung-Chan Hung et al.

Summary: The increasing number of studies on ultrahigh-performance concrete (UHPC) or ultrahigh-performance fiber-reinforced concrete (UHP-FRC) for resilient and sustainable reinforced concrete (RC) structures highlights the need for in-depth understanding of the structural behavior of reinforced UHPC (R/UHPC) components. The unique mechanical properties of UHPC require careful consideration when applying design and analysis approaches from conventional RC elements to R/UHPC elements, suggesting the need for new design philosophies to optimize the advantages of UHPC.
