Wenbo Gao et al.

Summary: The study assessed the impact of rigid central clamps (RCCs) on the longitudinal deformation of a long-span suspension bridge, showing that RCCs can reduce longitudinal deformation by 35% to 45% and significantly decrease the probability of exceeding the design threshold, making them an effective measure to enhance the service life of the shortest suspenders and expansion joints in long-span suspension bridges.

Case study of vortex-induced vibration and mitigation mechanism for a long-span suspension bridge

Yaojun Ge et al.

Summary: This study systematically investigates the triggering mechanism and mitigation measures of VIV phenomena in Humen Bridge using field measurements, numerical simulations, and wind tunnel tests. The results show that the temporary installation of water-filled barriers caused the sudden first VIV, while the reduction of structural damping caused the succedent secondary VIV. After verification, aerodynamic control and structural damping control measures were successfully applied and effectively suppressed VIVs in Humen Bridge.

Parameters optimization and performance evaluation of multiple tuned mass dampers to mitigate the vortex-induced vibration of a long-span bridge

Sijie Peng et al.

Summary: Vortex-induced vibration (VIV) is a significant dynamic problem for long-span bridges, and the control and mitigation of VIV using multiple tuned mass dampers (MTMD) can effectively reduce the displacement amplitude of the bridge. The performance of MTMD is better than that of the single tuned mass damper (STMD), and it is independent of the mass distribution. The interference between complex modes and the energy barrier between the bridge deck and the MTMD contribute to the excellent performance of MTMD.

Summary: This paper presents an efficient method for multi-mode vortex-induced vibration (VIV) control of long-span bridges by using spatially distributed TMDIs (DTMDIs). Summary: This study proposes a novel concept to supplement damping to long-span bridges, by damping rotations of the bridge girder during vertical and torsional vibrations. The concept is realized by a damped outrigger connected to the bridge girder, and numerical results show that it can effectively suppress the multimode vibrations of long-span bridges.

Summary: This study focuses on the multimode damping effects of dampers enhanced by negative stiffness devices (NSDs) and inerters for high-rise structures and large-span bridges. The results show that the NSDs achieve comparable damping enhancement for all modes, while the inerters tend to only affect specific modes and lock the relative motion in higher structural modes.

Multiple tuned mass damper control of vortex-induced vibration in bridges based on failure probability

Jun Dai et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a framework using a multiple tuned mass damper (MTMD) instead of a single tuned mass damper (STMD) to improve the robustness in mitigating vortex-induced vibration (VIV) in bridges. The framework considers the uncertainties in bridge, aerodynamic, and MTMD parameters to optimize the MTMD design based on a failure probability. Results show that the intensity and uncertainties of VIV have a significant influence on the MTMD performance, and the robustness advantage of MTMD over STMD is only evident when the VIV intensity is moderate or strong.
