Point Density Variations in Airborne Lidar Point Clouds

Vaclav Petras et al.

Summary: Despite improvements in point density and accuracy, airborne lidar point clouds still exhibit variations in point density. These variations can indicate issues and potentially lead to errors in derived products. In this study, we provide an overview of point density variations and showcase examples from six airborne lidar point cloud datasets used in our research. Through literature review, we identify sources and issues associated with point density variations. We also discuss techniques such as decimation and homogenization for reducing these variations and their applicability.

Insights into some large-scale landslides in southeastern margin of Qinghai-Tibet Plateau

Bo Zhao et al.

Summary: The southeastern margin of Qinghai-Tibet Plateau is a typical large landslide-prone area with intense tectonic activity, deeply incised valleys, high geostress, and frequent earthquakes. A study in the region surrounding the Sichuan-Tibet traffic corridors identified at least 629 large landslides, mainly concentrated in 7 zones. The most common landslide type is flows, and earthquakes are likely the most common triggers.

More frequent glacier-rock avalanches in Sedongpu gully are blocking the Yarlung Zangbo River in eastern Tibet

Weile Li et al.

Summary: Glacier-rock avalanches (GRAs) have been occurring frequently in the Sedongpu gully in the eastern Himalayan syntaxis, causing blockages in the Yarlung Zangbo River. Through analyzing remote sensing images and digital surface models, it was found that at least eight GRAs have occurred in the past few decades, with the ones since 2014 causing significant loss of glacier, rock, and moraine deposits. Climate change-induced glacier retreat, steep topography, and a recent strong earthquake were identified as influencing factors for these recent GRAs, which also resulted in the formation of a knickpoint in the Yarlung Zangbo River.

Progressive destabilization and triggering mechanism analysis using multiple data for Chamoli rockslide in 7 February 2021

Wenfei Mao et al.

Summary: This study used satellite data to analyze a catastrophic rockslide event that occurred in the Chamoli area of the Himalayas on 7 February 2021. By developing a 3D geometric model, researchers identified several factors that contributed to the landslide, including long-term changes in land surface temperature, ice avalanches, the formation of side cracks, and increased air temperatures. The findings highlight the need for close attention to geological hazards associated with global warming and climate change in the Himalayan region, and collaboration in observation.

Discontinuity interpretation and identification of potential rockfalls for high-steep slopes based on UAV nap-of-the-object photogrammetry

Wei Wang et al.

Summary: Discontinuity extraction and interpretation play a vital role in analyzing rock slope stability. This study proposes a practical solution for rockfall identification on high-steep slopes by using noncontact photogrammetry and a combination of 2D images and 3D point clouds. Through a case study in Wanzhou, Chongqing, China, the authors establish a centimeter-level 3D textured digital outcrop model (TDOM) and dense point cloud (PC) to interpret the discontinuity of fractured masses. The proposed method considers various failure modes and their joint combinations through kinematic analysis, and determines rock slope stability using a matrix that incorporates slope mass rating (SMR) and the parameter rock cavity rate (RCR).
