Predicting crack growth of paving materials under indirect tensile fatigue loads

Hui Li et al.

Summary: Cracking of paving materials affects the reliability and safety of pavement structures, and existing studies have used reduced modulus or strength to indirectly quantify cracking damage under IDT fatigue loads. A direct analysis method for crack growth under IDT fatigue loads is still missing. This study proposes a crack growth prediction model based on CDM that can directly quantify and predict crack growth in paving materials. Results show that the CDM-based model accurately predicts crack lengths for cement-treated aggregates and asphalt mixtures.

Thermodynamics of healing of asphalt binders with free energy

Xue Luo et al.

Summary: Inspired by self-healing attributes, this study explores the local kinetics and mechanism of asphalt binders that favor autonomous self-healing using a free energy method. The results show that more negative free energy change indicates a greater tendency to spontaneous healing, while SBS-modified asphalt binder exhibits a superior healing potential on a shorter crack length scale. The thermodynamic healing indexes provide a new vision regarding healing potential and reveal the true ability of a material to autonomously repair damaged areas.

Fatigue damage characteristics of geocell-reinforced asphalt mixture

Wang Xianrong et al.

Summary: This study developed a new method to improve the service life of asphalt pavement by adding geocell as a reinforcement for asphalt mixture. The fatigue life of reinforced specimens was significantly improved compared to unreinforced specimens, with improvement rates dependent on loading temperature. The viscoelastic damage model showed changes in elastic modulus and viscosity coefficients with stress ratio and loading temperature, indicating the beneficial effects of using geocell reinforcement in asphalt pavement.

Stochastic fatigue damage in viscoelastic materials using probabilistic pseudo J-integral Paris' law

Hui Li et al.

Summary: This study aims to track the entire fatigue damage process of viscoelastic materials by coupling the variability with the fatigue damage mechanism. Results show that the damage density can be determined by the apparent shear modulus and true shear modulus, and the damage evolution rate is a function of multiple factors. A stochastic fatigue damage model is proposed to predict the variability of fatigue damage process based on material parameters and variability parameters.

A mechanistic framework for tensile fatigue resistance of asphalt mixtures

Meng Ling et al.

Summary: This study proposed a mechanistic framework to determine the Paris' law parameters A' and n' of asphalt mixtures and fatigue life of asphalt pavements, using dynamic modulus and indirect tensile test results. It was found that the fracture resistance of asphalt mixtures can be characterized by n', with a smaller value indicating better fracture resistance. Additionally, a mode-I fatigue life equation for reflection cracking in asphalt pavements was proposed based on the J-integral and Paris' law parameters, suggesting that fatigue life transfer function can be determined from material properties and pavement conditions.

Micromechanics modeling of viscoelastic asphalt-filler composite system with and without fatigue cracks

Hui Li et al.

Summary: This study focuses on fatigue cracking of viscoelastic asphalt composite materials, using an example of asphalt-filler composite system. By conducting experiments and proposing models, the study introduces VSC and VSC-f models to accurately predict shear modulus under different conditions for viscoelastic asphalt-filler composite materials. Results show dependency of VSC and VSC-f models on loading frequency, temperature, and filler content, but independence on strain level.
