Metal foam and fin implementation into a triple concentric tube heat exchanger over melting evolution

M. A. Erfani Moghaddam et al.

Summary: This study focuses on addressing the inadequate thermal conductivity of phase change materials (PCMs) by adding fins and incorporating porous media in a melting process within a triple concentric tube heat exchanger (TCTHX). The results indicate that the application of fins and copper metal foam outperforms other cases, and porous media plays a more crucial role in speeding up the melting process.

Melting of PCMs Embedded in Copper Foams: An Experimental Study

Andrea Diani et al.

Summary: Passive cooling methods, such as Phase Change Materials (PCMs), are a smart possible way to cool electronics equipment without additional power input. This study experimentally investigates the melting process of different PCMs with various melting temperatures and the use of copper foam to enhance thermal conductivity. Results show that higher heat flux leads to shorter PCM melting time, and copper foam with a relative density of 9.5% performs slightly better in this cooling system.

Summary: This study explores the use of a triplex-tube heat exchanger with hybrid nanoparticles to address the weak thermal conductivity of Phase Change Material (PCM) based storage units. Through Galerkin Finite Element Method (GFEM) analysis and experimental validation, it was found that the combined usage of nanoparticles and tree-like fins significantly reduces solidification time, with tree-like fins demonstrating the best performance.

Heat transfer enhancement in latent heat thermal energy storage using copper foams with varying porosity

Jie Lei et al.

Summary: The study shows that incorporating copper foams into PCM significantly enhances the heat transfer performance of LHTES, reducing the full melting time by 73.7% and increasing the average heat flux density from 96.38W to 330.16W. Dividing the copper foam into upper and lower parts and increasing porosity separately along the positive x and y directions is the optimal method, leading to reductions in full melting time and increases in average heat flux density.
