Levelized cost of hydrogen for refueling stations with solar PV and wind in Sweden: On-grid or off-grid?

Ou Tang et al.

Summary: This study introduces a model to identify the key cost components of renewable hydrogen for refueling stations, and simulates the performance using data from Swedish cities. It demonstrates the importance of integrating the electricity grid in green hydrogen production, with wind speed crucial in reducing costs. Additionally, a combination of solar and wind brings better performance in an off-grid scenario.

Comparative assessment of blue hydrogen from steam methane reforming, autothermal reforming, and natural gas decomposition technologies for natural gas-producing regions

A. O. Oni et al.

Summary: Interest in blue hydrogen production technologies is increasing, but a comprehensive assessment is still needed. This study compares the cost and greenhouse gas emissions of three natural gas-based blue hydrogen production technologies and finds that steam methane reforming and autothermal reforming are economically preferable. The study also highlights the importance of plant size and carbon capture rate in determining the cost and emissions of blue hydrogen production.

Planning for the evolution of the electric grid with a long-run marginal emission rate

Pieter Gagnon et al.

Summary: Emissions factors are widely used to estimate the impact of interventions on emissions in the electric sector, but commonly used metrics neglect the influence of electricity demand changes on the structural evolution of the grid. This study evaluates a lesser known metric, the long-run marginal emission rate (LRMER), and finds that it outperforms other metrics in predicting emissions from interventions, suggesting that adopting LRMER could improve decision-making.

Simultaneity of green energy and hydrogen production: Analysing the dispatch of a grid-connected electrolyser

David Schlund et al.

Summary: This study presents a model framework to assess the dispatch of grid-connected electrolysers. Through a case study of the German electricity market, it is found that simultaneity can reduce the CO2 emission intensity of hydrogen while constraining profits. The choice of simultaneity interval length affects the average contribution margin and profit at risk of the electrolyser.

Techno-economic assessment of renewable hydrogen production and the influence of grid participation

Moritz Raab et al.

Summary: This study developed a tool using linear programming approach to evaluate the renewable hydrogen production costs and its interaction with the grid at any location worldwide. Detailed technoeconomic evaluation was conducted for five locations, revealing hydrogen production costs within a certain range. Furthermore, it was found that costs can be further reduced with perspective cost data.

Hourly marginal electricity mixes and their relevance for assessing the environmental performance of installations with variable load or power

Jens F. Peters et al.

Summary: The ongoing energy transition is leading to changes in the electricity system and the associated environmental impacts. The variability of generation increases with more renewable energy, affecting the environmental impacts or benefits of devices like electric vehicles or storage systems. Existing assessments often overlook the dynamic nature of renewable generation. This article provides detailed hourly average and marginal electricity mixes for each month, highlighting the importance of considering the dynamics of the electricity system when optimizing flexible load or generation technologies under environmental aspects.

Rafael Martinez-Gordon et al.

Summary: The North Sea Offshore Grid concept is an promising alternative to integrate offshore wind and onshore energy systems and increase cross-border capacity in the North Sea region. This paper explores the techno-economic benefits of the offshore grid using two case studies and presents a novel methodology for defining meaningful regions. The results show significant cost savings and the potential for integrating a large amount of offshore wind and interconnectors.

Daniela Pereira Macedo et al.

Summary: This study assesses the impact of wind power generation and cross-border electricity flow on the day-ahead electricity price. Results show that wind power has a significant impact on electricity prices, while both import and export electricity flows tend to increase prices. Additionally, unexpected shocks are found to primarily drive the volatility of electricity prices in the SE3 BZ region.

The effect of price-based demand response on carbon emissions in European electricity markets: The importance of adequate carbon prices

Markus Fleschutz et al.

Summary: The study proposes two methods to approximate hourly marginal emission factors and simulates standardized daily load shifts for 20 European countries. Results show that some countries experienced an increase in carbon emissions by 2.1%, and MEF-based load shifts reduced resulting carbon emissions by 35% but with 56% lower cost savings compared to price-based load shifts. Additionally, the analysis of different carbon price levels indicated that PBDR can be an effective tool for both economical and environmental improvement with adequate carbon prices.
