Predicting industrial building energy consumption with statistical and machine-learning models informed by physical system parameters

Sean Kapp et al.

Summary: The industrial sector consumes a significant amount of global energy and is often targeted for reduction. Previous models had limitations in capturing all factors contributing to energy consumption. Using data from 45 manufacturing plants, a machine-learning model was developed to predict industrial building energy consumption. The model incorporates weather conditions, support equipment parameters, and production-related factors. Results showed that a linear regression model outperformed a support vector machine and utilized features more representative of physical systems.
