Power balance control and dimensioning of a hybrid off-grid energy system for a Nordic climate townhouse

Altti Merilainen et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the conversion of a Nordic oil-heated townhouse into a carbon-neutral building by implementing energy efficiency improvements and an off-grid system with solar photovoltaics, wind power, and battery and hydrogen energy storage systems. The study uses MATLAB and Microsoft Excel to determine the dimensioning of a heat-pump-based heating system and an off-grid electrical system, based on life cycle costs (LCC). The results show that energy efficiency improvements and waste heat recovery from the hydrogen energy storage system have a positive impact on the dimensioning of the off-grid system, reducing the LCC by up to 2 million euros. Wind power is found to be highly relevant in Nordic conditions, reducing the LCC by 32%.

Optimal battery capacity of grid-connected PV-battery systems considering battery degradation

Yaling Wu et al.

Summary: The study proposed a mixed-integer nonlinear programming model for optimizing the capacity and operation of PV-battery systems. The results showed that battery degradation could increase operation costs, with cases considering degradation having larger battery capacities and higher life cycle costs. Compared with cases without degradation, they have smaller optimal battery capacities and higher self-consumption ratios.

Optimization of rooftop photovoltaic installations to maximize revenue in Finland based on customer class load profiles and simulated generation

Altti Merilainen et al.

Summary: The profitability of a rooftop solar PV system depends on factors such as electricity price, building load profile, and module orientation. This study compares single-azimuth and dual-azimuth systems and suggests using a single-azimuth system when surplus electricity is compensated, while orienting the modules east-west when no compensation is given.
