Estimating building cooling energy demand through the Cooling Degree Hours in a changing climate: A modeling study

Ferdinando Salata et al.

Summary: The increasingly hot and long summers due to climate change will significantly increase the energy demand for cooling systems, especially in highly-densely populated regions. This study investigates the evolution of cooling energy needs in Italy by analyzing gridded temperatures and finds that by 2080, about 70% of the country will experience higher levels of cooling degree hours compared to the past.

Characterizing regional building energy consumption under joint climatic and socioeconomic impacts

Haiyan Duan et al.

Summary: This study tracks and analyzes the building energy consumption in 24 provincial regions of China, revealing the influence of climatic and socioeconomic conditions on energy consumption. The results show that energy consumption is high in the material preparation and operation stages of the building process, and climatic and socioeconomic conditions have a decisive impact on these differences. The findings of this research can provide more relevant considerations for the formulation of regional building energy conservation policies.

On the association between high outdoor thermo-hygrometric comfort index and severe ground-level ozone: A first investigation

Serena Falasca et al.

Summary: The year 2015 was the warmest on record, with high levels of tropospheric ozone in Milan from May to September. The study found that thermo-hygrometric stress conditions added to poor air quality conditions, posing severe risks to human health. Additionally, a daily correlation coefficient of 0.6 was found between the Mediterranean Outdoor Comfort Index (MOCI) and daily ozone levels during this period.

Impacts of climate change on heating and cooling degree-hours over China

Ying Shi et al.

Summary: Based on data from 2,307 meteorological stations in China and climate change simulations, this study investigates future changes in heating and cooling degree-hours under the RCP4.5 scenario at the end of the 21st century. The model realistically simulates present-day HDH and CDH, with significant decreases in HDH and increases in CDH projected for the end of the century. Differences in these changes are observed across different time periods.
