In situ modeling methodologies in building operation: A review

Sungmin Yoon

Summary: The generation of building information and operational data during the building life cycle is crucial for achieving energy-efficient operation, indoor environmental quality, and digitalization in the context of intelligent buildings. At the city scale, building operation information is necessary to evaluate and improve energy efficiency towards carbon neutrality in the building sector. Traditional modeling approaches for building information and digitalization have limitations due to different building designs, gaps between design and operation, aging-related changes, and experimental issues. This paper proposes in situ modeling methodologies for building operations based on a literature review, discussing modeling environment, model purpose, model source, modeling approach, in situ verification, and in situ calibration. Practical challenges, various scenarios, strategies, and in situ model fusion are suggested to overcome the limitations of existing building operation modeling environments. Future research directions are also proposed to facilitate continuous information modeling and digitalization of operations throughout the building life cycle.

Load shifting and energy conservation using smart thermostats in contemporary high-rise residential buildings: Estimation of runtime changes using field data

Helen Stopps et al.

Summary: As the urban population grows, so does the number of highrise residential buildings. Heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) account for over half of the energy use in these buildings in Canada. Smart thermostats offer an opportunity to conserve energy and shift electricity load through HVAC control modifications. The study tested three thermostat control strategies and found that occupancy-based control reduced HVAC runtime, while load shifting control was not effective at reducing peak period loads.

Overall uncertainty analysis of zonal indoor air temperature measurement in an in-use office building

Catalina Giraldo-Soto et al.

Summary: In this research, a method to estimate the overall Temperature Uncertainty (UT) and decouple it into the Temperature Sensor Uncertainty (UT(S)) and Temperature's Spatial Uncertainty (UT(SP)) has been developed. The importance of estimating the Temperature Sensor Uncertainty (UT(S)) when installing a monitoring system is emphasized, as it may differ from the manufacturer's accuracy. The results show that the Temperature Sensor Uncertainty (UT(S)) only represents a small percentage (5% to 11%) of the overall zonal indoor air Temperature Uncertainty (UT).

Comfort control and improved thermostat location in conference rooms and academic working spaces

Nikhilesh Ghanta et al.

Summary: The study examined the challenge of comfort control in commercial and academic spaces, finding that placing the thermostat in the middle of the room (such as on a table) improves thermal comfort conditions compared to having it on a wall opposite an external window. The main causes of deviation were convective and infrared heat transfer from the window surface and solar gains to the interior.
