TG-DSC and TG-FTIR analysis of heavy fuel oil and vacuum residual oil pyrolysis and combustion: characterization, kinetics, and evolved gas analysis

Mohammed AlAbbad et al.

Summary: This study investigated the pyrolysis and combustion of heavy fuel oil (HFO) and vacuum residual oil (VRO) using a thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA). The results showed that pyrolysis was slightly slower than combustion at low temperatures, but significantly faster at high temperatures. Both oils resulted in minimal residue during combustion, while pyrolysis produced 10-19% residue. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) was used to analyze the evolved volatiles from these processes.

Surrogate formulation and molecular characterization of sulfur species in vacuum residues using APPI and ESI FT-ICR mass spectrometry

Abdul Gani Abdul Jameel et al.

Summary: VR is a byproduct of crude oil vacuum distillation, primarily used for the production of syn-gas, hydrogen, heavy fuel oil for power generation and shipping. Due to its high sulfur content, desulfurization is necessary according to emission standards. Detailed molecular characterization of sulfur species in VR can be achieved using high-resolution FT-ICR MS, enabling classification and understanding of the sulfur structures present.

Ionization selectivity of electrospray and atmospheric pressure photoionization FT-ICR MS for petroleum refinery wastewater dissolved organic matter

Chen He et al.

Summary: The study characterized two significantly different DOM samples from petroleum refinery wastewater and river water using FT-ICR MS with various ionization modes. It was found that wastewater DOM was dominated by acid O-x and basic N1Ox classes in negative-ion and positive-ion ESI mode, respectively. Refinery wastewater DOM showed higher molecular complexity and enrichment in hydrocarbons, nitrogen- and sulfur-containing compounds compared to riverine DOM.
