Study on the Microscopic Pore Structures of Coal Measure Reservoirs in the Shanxi Formation, Eastern Ordos Basin

Pengfei Jiao et al.

Summary: The Carboniferous-Permian coal measures in China have abundant natural gas resources. This study systematically investigated the pore structures of shale, coal, and tight sandstone reservoirs in the Shan 2 Member coal measure using various techniques. The results showed significant differences in the microscopic pore structures of these different reservoir types, with sandstone-shale-coal assemblages and sandstone-coal assemblages being the key targets for hydrocarbon exploration.

Pore-based architecture and representative element volume evaluation in artificial sand packs and natural rock cores

Peng-Fei Lv et al.

Summary: This study systematically evaluates the pore-based architecture and representative elementary volume (REV) sizes of 22 porous samples using X-ray CT image analysis and pore network modeling. The results show that irregular grain shapes result in larger specific areas and narrower throats in identical sand packs. Additionally, packs composed of multiple types of sands or sands with larger diameter differences have larger specific areas, smaller tortuosity, and pore spaces.

Micro-Nanopore Structure and Fractal Characteristics of Tight Sandstone Gas Reservoirs in the Eastern Ordos Basin, China

Peng Qiao et al.

Summary: Quantitative characterization of the micro-nanopore structure of tight sandstone reservoirs is crucial for understanding gas accumulation and distribution. Through a combination of various experiments, it was found that dissolution pores with diameters less than 8 µm are the main contributors to gas storage space in tight sandstone reservoirs, with a pore size distribution concentrated in the range of 247-371 nm. The fractal characteristics of the sandstones, including nanopore fractal dimension and large pore fractal dimension, are positively correlated with porosity and negatively correlated with permeability.

Research on Characterization and Heterogeneity of Microscopic Pore Throat Structures in Tight Oil Reservoirs

Xinli Zhao et al.

Summary: The key to efficient development of tight reservoir lies in accurate evaluation. This study analyzed the pore throat structure characteristics of sandstone samples using high-pressure mercury injection technology, dividing the samples into three types based on capillary pressure curve characteristics. High-resolution imaging and scanning electron microscopy revealed an increasing level of pore disconnection and poor reservoir performance as reservoir permeability declines. Fractal theory was used to calculate fractal dimensions of reservoirs, showing a gradual increase in fractal dimensions with decrease in reservoir quality.

Simulating permeability reduction by clay mineral nanopores in a tight sandstone by combining computer X-ray microtomography and focussed ion beam scanning electron microscopy imaging

Arne Jacob et al.

Summary: The study successfully investigates the impact of clay minerals at the nanometer scale on the permeability of tight reservoir sandstone samples using a combination of FIB-SEM and X-ray tomographic rock core scans. By defining microporous domains and calculating permeability, a more accurate representation of reservoir rock permeability was achieved compared to estimation based solely on mu XCT images.
