Summary: The wetting properties of rock play a crucial role in determining the success of CO2-EOR projects and CO2 geo-sequestration. Experimental results show that oil-wet rock can store approximately 12% of CO2, while water-wet rock can store approximately 20% of CO2, and it is also more efficient in extracting oil.

Summary: Understanding the mass transfer of CO2 into formation brine is crucial for the safety of geologic carbon sequestration. This study used quasi-dynamic X-ray micro-computed tomographic imaging to track the evolution of scCO2 clusters in sandstone during brine injection. The mass transfer coefficient of individual scCO2 clusters was found to range between 3.0x10-5 and 3.5x10-4 mm/s, with a macroscopic average of 1.4x10-4 mm/s. These values provide insight into the range of mass transfer coefficients expected for similar conditions. The study also highlighted the coupling of dissolution and mobilization processes, emphasizing the need to understand these dynamics for effective CO2 storage.

Super resolution techniques and image quality evaluation based on pore throat resolution are proposed to overcome this limitation. Additionally, the use of registered micro-CT images and the ratio of pore throat size to voxel size as grouping criteria in the training dataset are suggested to improve image sharpness and contrast while refining voxel size beyond current technology capabilities.

Summary: This study proposes a new mechanism of preferential flow control in heterogeneous porous media by manipulating the concentration of microgel particle suspension, which is supported by microfluidic experiments and pore-scale simulations. By controlling the injection concentration, different transport modes can be identified, and the optimal synchronous displacement is achieved at an intermediate injection concentration. However, weak concentration manipulation at low injection concentrations and frequent alternation of preferential flow pathways at high injection concentrations can lead to entrapment of oleic ganglia. These findings deepen the understanding of microgel particle suspension dynamics in heterogeneous porous media and have implications for applications such as enhanced oil recovery and CO2 sequestration.

Summary: This study simulated the reactive transport processes in porous media with dissolution of solid structures using the lattice Boltzmann method. Six dissolution patterns were identified under different Peclet and Damkohler numbers. The increase in heterogeneity intensified the wormhole phenomena and led to higher permeability. The study also found that permeability is more sensitive to the alteration of structural heterogeneity compared to specific surface area, and it is challenging to propose a general formula between permeability and porosity under different reactive transport conditions and structural heterogeneity. The use of deep neural network showed promising potential in predicting the complicated variations of permeability in heterogeneous porous media with dissolution of solid structures.

Summary: Digital Rock Physics has opened up a new avenue for more detailed inferences by exploring the microscale world of rocks. Recent advances in Machine Learning and Convolutional Neural Networks have improved the ability to generate high-resolution images from low-resolution counterparts. This study proposes a multiscale approach and introduces an efficient network, SRDUN, which performs accurately for small scale-differences but becomes more complex for high scale-differences. A multistep procedure is proposed to address this issue and is shown to produce more reliable results for computations of reservoir parameters. The direct approach performs better for morphometric properties, while the multistep procedure preserves pore size distribution better.
