Insights into catalytic effects of clay minerals on hydrocarbon composition of generated liquid products during oil cracking from laboratory pyrolysis experiments

Meng He et al.

Summary: Experimental results showed that oil cracking in reservoir rocks versus source rocks can be differentiated based on the relative concentrations of C7 hydrocarbons in the cracking products. The distribution of light hydrocarbons in the final products is influenced by the matrix effect from clay minerals and surrounding medium. Different types of source rocks and clay minerals may have varying effects on the cracking products of oil.

Relationship between aromatic hydrogen and aromatic carbon in straight run and converted oils

Lina M. Yanez Jaramillo et al.

Summary: It is difficult to track compositional changes that affect the chemical nature of species during the conversion of high boiling oil fractions. Proton and carbon-13 nuclear magnetic resonance (H-1 and C-13 NMR) spectrometry can measure the aromatic hydrogen and aromatic carbon content in oils. There is only a rough correlation between aromatic carbon content and aromatic hydrogen content.

Free Radical and Cationic Addition due to Clay Minerals Found in Bitumen Froth at 250 °C Probed with Use of α-Methylstyrene and 1-Octene

Annapurna Sri Sowmya Turuga et al.

Summary: This study investigates the promoting effect of clay minerals found in bitumen froth on the formation of heavier materials. The presence of clay minerals increases the conversion rate of probe molecules and promotes the occurrence of some side reactions.

Hydrothermal Treatment of Bitumen Froth: Impact of Mineral Solids and Water on Bitumen Properties

Annapurna Sri Sowmya Turuga et al.

Summary: The study found that hydrothermal treatment at 250 degrees Celsius did not lead to upgrading of bitumen, with beneficial effects observed only when bitumen was converted on its own. The presence of water and/or mineral solids increased viscosity and free radical content in bitumen.

Analysis of montmorillonite affecting coke formation during the thermal conversion of heavy oil

Ruonan Zheng et al.

Summary: Montmorillonite plays a significant role in catalyzing the aromatization and polymerization, oxygen-adding reaction, decarbonylation and decarboxylation, as well as polycondensation during the thermal conversion of heavy oil. Increasing the supporter surface area promotes coke formation from pyrolysis, while the catalysis of montmorillonite is the main mechanism affecting coke formation under both inert and oxidizing atmospheres.

Processing Unconventional Oil: Partial Upgrading of Oilsands Bitumen

Arno de Klerk

Summary: The paper discusses the processing of unconventional oil to meet transportation and market demands, presenting different approaches and discussing the concept of partial upgrading. The study concludes that single-step partial upgrading processes have limited prospect to meet requirements without substantial yield loss.

Thermal cracking, aquathermolysis, and their upgrading effects of Mackay River oil sand

Xiao Qu et al.

Summary: In this study, thermal cracking and aquathermolysis reactions were conducted on Mackay River oil sand to analyze the changes in properties of the oil samples. It was found that aquathermolysis was more effective in improving the quality of the oil sand, and fitted equations were obtained to predict the viscosity reduction effects. Gas compositions were also identified as a useful indicator for monitoring the cracking performance of the oil sand in both thermal cracking and aquathermolysis processes.
