Review on the Theoretical Understanding of Oxygen Carrier Development for Chemical-Looping Technologies

Feng Liu et al.

Summary: This article reviews the application of density functional theory (DFT) in understanding the mechanisms for oxygen carrier development during chemical-looping combustion (CLC). The reactivity and detailed reaction mechanism of oxygen carriers are summarized, and the interaction between various components and the synergy in oxygen carriers are revealed. Emphasis is placed on DFT calculations to understand and predict variations in reactivity from one oxygen carrier to another, as well as to evaluate and screen oxygen carriers with appropriate properties.

CuFe2O4/CuO magnetic nano-composite activates PMS to remove ciprofloxacin: Ecotoxicity and DFT calculation

Bo He et al.

Summary: In this study, CuFe2O4 was attached to CuO using hydrothermal and high-temperature calcination methods. The (111) plane of CuO and (112) plane of CuFe2O4 formed a surface heterojunction, which facilitated the adsorption of PMS. The charge transfer and charge density in the CuFe2O4/CuO/PMS system were investigated using density functional theory (DFT) and transmission electron microscope (TEM). The experimental data showed that both nonradical singlet oxygen (1O2) and active radicals (center dot OH, center dot SO4-) were involved in the degradation of CIP. The degradation pathways and intermediates were proposed using Fukui index and liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS). The study also evaluated the bioaccumulation factor and toxic effects of intermediates using toxicity calculation software. CuFe2O4/CuO demonstrated good reusability and stability. Overall, this study provides valuable insights into the mechanisms of organic pollutants degradation using Fe-Cu catalyst and achieved a CIP removal rate of 86.67% under optimal conditions.

Experimental and theoretical studies on formaldehyde catalytic combustion over Cu-Fe spinel-type catalyst

Junyan Ding et al.

Summary: A series of Cu-Fe spinel-type catalysts were synthesized for HCHO catalytic combustion, and a combined experimental and theoretical investigation was conducted to uncover the reaction process. Cu0.5Fe2.5O4 catalyst showed excellent catalytic performance due to high crystallinity facilitating HCHO adsorption and oxidation. The flexible valences of metal cations in spinel-type catalysts benefited electron transfer for efficient HCHO combustion.

Spatial evolution characteristics of active components of copper-iron based oxygen carrier in chemical looping combustion

Fang Liu et al.

Summary: The reactivity of oxygen carriers in chemical looping technology is crucial, and understanding the spatial evolution of active components and lattice oxygen migration during reduction reaction is essential. Experimental and theoretical studies in this research have shown that as the reduction reaction progresses, lattice oxygen is gradually depleted, leading to an increase in Cu-0 and Fe2+ content.
