Enhancement of efficiency and power output of hydrogen fuelled proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cell using oxygen enriched air

Summary: This paper investigates the effects of oxygen-enriched air, along with other operating parameters, on the performance of a hydrogen-fuelled proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cell. The results show that 45% oxygen enrichment is optimal, and the stack temperature plays a significant role in performance improvement. The voltage efficiency and power output are improved with 45% oxygen-enriched air. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy reveals the impedance behavior of the fuel cell under variable current demand.

Renewable hydrogen production using non-potable water: Thermal integration of membrane distillation and water electrolysis stack

Summary: This study evaluated the potential benefits of thermally integrating a membrane distillation heat exchanger (MDHX) with water electrolysis for thermal management of waste heat and simultaneous production of fresh water for hydrogen production. A MATLAB model was used to simulate a combined MDHX and water electrolysis stack, showing that the MDHX-EC system can regulate the temperature of an AEM electrolyser and produce fresh water at the same rate as water consumption. These results suggest that further experimental studies should be conducted to explore the performance and economic benefits of this integrated system.
