Improvement of lean blow out performance of spray and premixed swirled flames using nanosecond repetitively pulsed discharges

Guillaume Vignat et al.

Summary: Plasma-Assisted Combustion (PAC) shows potential in improving ignition, extinction, and dynamic performance of combustion systems. Nanosecond Repetitively Pulsed (NRP) spark discharges are used to extend the lean blow out (LBO) limit of the SICCA-Spray burner by finding the optimal electrode position near the external edge of the outer recirculation zone (ORZ). The results indicate significant improvement in extinction performance with PAC, particularly when operating with liquid fuel spray injection.

Plasma-assisted stabilization of premixed swirl flames by gliding arc discharges ?

Jinguo Sun et al.

Summary: The paper investigates the effects of gliding arc discharges on stability limits of externally perturbed methane/air swirl flames. Results show that the lean blowout limits in perturbed flames are extended by up to 60% with the expansion of inner recirculation zone. The flame response to flow disturbance consists of enhancement, extinction, and re-ignition processes, with a strong non-linear coupling between the plasma and turbulent flame identified through proper orthogonal decomposition analysis.

The blow-off and transient characteristics of co-firing ammonia/methane fuels in a swirl combustor

Meng Zhang et al.

Summary: Recent studies have shown that ammonia is a promising hydrogen carrier, but faces challenges when burned in gas turbines. Addition of methane can improve the combustion stability of ammonia, while swirl number has limited effect on ammonia flame.

A numerical investigation of NH3/O2/He ignition limits in a non-thermal plasma

Galia Faingold et al.

Summary: The study investigated the ignition characteristics of ammonia in a pulsed plasma discharge through numerical simulations. It was found that higher pulse repetition frequencies result in shorter ignition delay times, with high-frequency pulses supplying more radicals for a smooth transition and reactions at all temperatures.

Effect of Rotating Gliding Arc Plasma on Lean Blow-Off Limit and Flame Structure of Bluff Body and Swirl-Stabilized Premixed Flames

Rong-Yuan Ju et al.

Summary: The experimental results show that the rotating gliding arc plasma can effectively stabilize the flame, extend the flame blow-off limit, and promote the formation of OH radicals. The plasma column can provide active radicals and continuous ignition to sustain the flame, and thermal effect and kinetic effect may play dominant roles in the process.

Emission analysis of the CH4/NH3/air co-firing fuels in a model combustor

Meng Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the combustion performances and emission characteristics of co-firing CH4/NH3/air flame in a swirl combustor, and finds that low combustion efficiency and significant increase in NOX emissions occur in high eta NH3 flames when blending a small amount of ammonia. The co-firing flames produce large amount of NOx at lean conditions.

The regulation effect of methane and hydrogen on the emission characteristics of ammonia/air combustion in a model combustor

Meng Zhang et al.

Summary: The study shows that by adding active fuels like methane and hydrogen, the combustion intensity of ammonia/air flame can be enhanced, but it may lead to NOx emissions. However, under certain conditions, NOx emissions and unburned ammonia can be controlled simultaneously to a proper level.

Extension of flammability and stability limits of swirling premixed flames by AC powered gliding arc discharges

Yong Tang et al.

Summary: The work demonstrates that gliding arc discharges can extend the flammability and stability limits of swirling premixed flames, while suppressing flame oscillations. The mechanism controlling flame responses to gliding arc involves both external and local effects, providing additional anchoring mechanism and altering flame dynamics.

A review on ammonia, ammonia-hydrogen and ammonia-methane fuels

Wai Siong Chai et al.

Summary: The combustion of fuels for energy generation is crucial for human activities, but it results in emissions that cause environmental complications and health risks. The replacement of conventional fuels for zero carbon emission is important, with ammonia offering advantages over hydrogen as a carbon-free fuel, but facing challenges such as low burning velocity and high emissions. Therefore, the study of secondary fuels like hydrogen and methane to assist ammonia combustion is essential.
