An Insight into the Gelatinization Properties Influencing the Modified Starches Used in Food Industry: A review

Ishita Chakraborty et al.

Summary: This review explores the different methods of starch modification applicable in the food industry and analyzes their effects on the gelatinization properties of starch. Chemical modifications can decrease the gelatinization temperature, while physical modifications tend to increase it. These modifications have significant implications for improving the quality and performance of food products.

A Comparative Study of Various Pretreatment Approaches for Bio-Ethanol Production from Willow Sawdust, Using Co-Cultures and Mono-Cultures of Different Yeast Strains

Imen Ben Atitallah et al.

Summary: The effect of different pretreatment approaches based on alkali/hydrogen peroxide on willow sawdust biomass was investigated. The two-stage pretreatment approach led to higher delignification and saccharification efficiency, as well as higher ethanol concentration and yield. Co-cultures of Saccharomyces cerevisiae or Wickerhamomyces anomalus X19 with Pichia stipitis exhibited the highest ethanol yields.

Valorizing food wastes: assessment of novel yeast strains for enhanced production of single-cell protein from wasted date molasses

M. Hashem et al.

Summary: In this study, non-conventional yeast strains were selected and adapted to efficiently produce single-cell protein (SCP) from wasted date molasses (WDM). The experiment showed that certain yeast strains, such as H. guilliermondii and I. orientalis, have the highest biomass production and protein content, indicating their potential in industrial production for animal feed.

Experimental optimization of enzymatic and thermochemical pretreatments of bread waste by central composite design study for bioethanol production

Fatima Zohra Kahlouche et al.

Summary: The present study aimed to optimize the combined effect of enzymatic and thermo-chemical pretreatment hydrolysis of bread waste for enhancing the yield of reducing sugars. The optimal conditions for maximum reducing sugars yield were identified, and a good agreement was found between simulated and experimental data using the modified Gompertz equation.

Process design and techno-economic analysis of fuel ethanol production from food waste by enzymatic hydrolysis and fermentation

Xikai Chen et al.

Summary: In this study, the techno-economic feasibility of fuel ethanol production from food waste using enzymatic hydrolysis and fermentation was evaluated. The plant was found to be economically viable with a payback time of 5 years and an internal rate of return below 29.8%. The price of fuel ethanol and the food waste treatment fee were identified as the most important factors affecting the economic performance of the plant.

Sustainable Second-Generation Bioethanol Production from Enzymatically Hydrolyzed Domestic Food Waste Using Pichia anomala as Biocatalyst

Ioanna Ntaikou et al.

Summary: This study assessed domestic food waste with high carbohydrate content as feedstock for bioethanol production, focusing on hydrolysis efficiency and ethanol yield. Results showed high fermentation efficiency of yeast and nearly complete liquefaction of waste with a blend of cellulolytic and amylolytic enzymes, leading to high ethanol yields. Scale-up fermentation experiments yielded similar ethanol yields to small scale experiments, indicating the potential for large-scale bioethanol production.

Economic perspective of ethanol and biodiesel coproduction from industrial hemp

Mothi Bharath Viswanathan et al.

Summary: This study investigated the economics of producing biofuels from an industrial hemp genotype, finding that increasing the lipid content in hemp can lead to higher biodiesel production and lower production costs. The simulation results showed that hemp with 10% lipids can achieve a comparable biodiesel unit production cost to soybean biodiesel, with the potential for cost reduction with lower hemp feedstock costs. Additionally, industrial hemp is capable of producing more total biofuels per hectare of agricultural land than soybean.
