Microstructural evolution of coal to char after pyrolysis using laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy and Raman spectroscopy

Wenkun Zhu et al.

Summary: Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) and Raman spectroscopy were used to analyze the microstructural characteristics after coal pyrolysis. The experimental results showed that the decrease of Raman baseline drift revealed the dissipation of sub-stituent, aliphatic, and carbonyl groups with increasing pyrolysis temperatures. LIBS and Raman spectra data indicated that coal undergoes dry degassing, substituent and aliphatic decomposition, and aromatic-ring condensation as the pyrolysis temperature increases.

Analysis of the permeability evolution law of in situ steam pyrolysis of bituminous coal combing with in situ CT technology

Jianhang Shi et al.

Summary: The permeability evolution of bituminous coal during in situ steam pyrolysis was investigated using in situ CT technology. The results revealed that: 1) Permeability exhibited a negative logarithmic relationship with pore pressure, which was associated with adsorption expansion; 2) Permeability followed a V-shaped pattern with temperature. Between 300-400 degrees C, the coal sample continued to soften under hydrothermal conditions, cracks were closed by external stress, and permeability decreased; 3) In the range of 400-600 degrees C, hydrothermal action promoted the pyrolysis of the coal samples and created more seepage channels. The continuous compression from external stress suppressed pore and fissure expansion. However, hydrothermal action played a dominant role in promoting permeability, leading to a piecewise linear growth in permeability. CT results demonstrated that the porosity trend of the coal samples was consistent with permeability; 4) Above 400 degrees C, superheated steam facilitated the pyrolysis of the coal samples and enhanced permeability due to its excellent convection, thermal conductivity, driving effect, and participation in chemical reactions.

Interaction of vitrinites in similar middle-rank coals during coking process

Jinze Li et al.

Summary: The interaction of vitrinites during the coking process greatly affects the properties of coke. The study evaluated the interaction of vitrinites by analyzing the characteristics of coke-CO2 gasification. The results showed that the maximum reaction rate and comprehensive gasification index of coke had a negative relationship with the content of TS vitrinite, indicating the interaction between EW and TS vitrinites. An interaction index based on gasification reactivity was proposed to characterize the degree of interaction between the two vitrinites, with a value of 6.9% based on G(c). XRD and Raman spectroscopy analysis revealed the relationship between microcrystalline structure parameters and gasification index. TS vitrinite in coal blending improved the graphite characteristics and carbon structure order in the coke, enhancing its resistance to CO2 erosion.

Summary: This study investigated the catalytic upgrading of rapid coal pyrolysis using waste hematite. The performances, kinetic parameters, and volatile composition of coal pyrolysis with Fe2O3 and hematite were compared using TG-FTIR and Py-GC/MS. The results showed that iron-based catalysts increased the weight loss rate of coal pyrolysis and reduced the apparent activation energy. The presence of Fe2O3 and hematite also led to a reduction in polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and oxygenates in the coal.

Molecular mechanisms of solid bitumen and vitrinite reflectance suppression explored using hydrous pyrolysis of artificial source rock

Margaret M. Sanders et al.

Summary: The commonly used thermal maturity calibration parameter, mean random vitrinite reflectance (R-o), is found to be suppressed in samples containing a high proportion of liptinite macerals. Raman and micro-Fourier transform infrared (mu-FTIR) analyses reveal different suppression mechanisms for vitrinite and solid bitumen. These findings suggest that the use of solid bitumen R-o for maturity calibration in liptinite-rich samples may result in misleading indicators.

Phyteral perspectives: Every maceral tells a story

James C. Hower et al.

Summary: Gilbert Cady introduced the concept of phyterals at a symposium honoring the 50th anniversary of the University of Chicago, which aims to distinguish actual plant fossils from macerals composed of fossils. Vitrinite and fusinite are regarded as the same phyteral despite being distinct macerals.
