Assessment of a cogeneration system for ceramic industry by using various exergy based economic approaches

Hasan Caglayan et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the exergy based economic analysis of a gas turbine cogeneration system for a ceramic tile plant. It is found that the irreversibilities caused by combustion reactions in the combustion chamber and dryers have negative effects on the destructed exergy cost rate. The exergy based economic factor rates of these components are lower than others. The system needs optimization to eliminate the intensive irreversibilities encountered in the components.

Experimental investigation of performance and emission characteristics of a miniature gas turbine supplied by blends of kerosene and waste tyre pyrolysis oil

T. Suchocki et al.

Summary: The research aims to investigate the effect of blending waste tyre pyrolysis oil with kerosene on the performance and emission parameters of a small gas turbine. It was found that as the fraction of pyrolytic oil in the blends increased, the turbine's performance and NOx emissions tended to increase at high rotational speeds, while SO2 emissions decreased across all blends.

Strategic assessment of sustainable aviation fuel production technologies: Yield improvement and cost reduction opportunities

Abid H. Tanzil et al.

Summary: The aviation industry has been studying strategies for producing sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) for over a decade, with a focus on detailed techno-economic analyses (TEA) of six SAF production technologies. Triglyceride-based Hydroprocessed esters and fatty acids (HEFA) emerged as the most economically competitive option, while lignocellulose-based technologies showed lower fuel yields and higher costs due to the high oxygen content of initial feedstock. Efforts are needed to improve SAF yields from lignocellulosic materials in order to achieve cost targets. Proposed integrated biomass/natural gas hybridized concepts could potentially result in more cost-effective SAF production.

Utilization of microalgae for bio-jet fuel production in the aviation sector: Challenges and perspective

Jackson Hwa Keen Lim et al.

Summary: The aviation sector contributes about 2% of global anthropogenic CO2 emissions, and efforts are being made to find cost-effective and environmentally-friendly bio-jet fuels derived from natural resources. Cultivation conditions for microalgae play a significant role in their growth rate and chemical composition, impacting the yield and quality of microalgae bio-jet fuel. The development of hydroprocessing techniques for converting microalgae oil into bio-jet fuel, as well as innovative approaches like gasification with Fischer-Tropsch and sugar-to-jet, offer promising alternatives to traditional aviation fuel production methods.

Summary: Pyrolysis is an effective thermochemical strategy for converting scrap tires into diesel-like fuels, with upgraded tire pyrolysis oil demonstrating improved physicochemical properties and performance characteristics when blended with diesel in a single-cylinder engine. The addition of a biomass-derived fuel oxygenate, ethyl levulinate, can further enhance the cold-flow properties and reduce exhaust emissions of the fuel blends. A fuel blend containing 50% diesel, 40% upgraded TPO, and 10% ethyl levulinate showed the best fuel properties in the engine tests.
