Numerical investigation of vortex-induced vibrational responses to a flexible tensioned riser with symmetric grooves in uniform currents

Hao Hu et al.

Summary: The numerical study on the vortex-induced vibration (VIV) of a flexible tensioned cylindrical riser with fixed symmetric grooves is conducted. The hydrodynamics forces and displacements of the riser during vibration are obtained by coupling the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) method and Euler-Bernoulli bending beam model. Different configurations of the riser, with varying groove angles and depths, are investigated. The results show that the groove angle of 90 degrees and depths of 0.12D and 0.16D (D is the riser diameter) achieve the best VIV suppression effect.
