Investigation on the structure evolution and thermochemical conversion characteristics of lignite after different pretreatment

Shucheng Liu et al.

Summary: Despite being important for efficient and clean lignite utilization, there are few studies on the downstream combustion and gasification characteristics of hydrothermal treatment dewatering (HTD). The present study examined the thermochemical characteristics and physicochemical structure of upgraded lignite by HTD and compared it with conventional flue gas treatment (FTD) processes. The results showed that HTD process promotes combustion reactivity, while both HTD and FTD processes decrease gasification reactivity of upgraded lignite.

Numerical optimization of combustion and NOX emission in a retrofitted 600MWe tangentially-fired boiler using lignite

Caixia Bian et al.

Summary: In order to meet ultralow NOx emission standard, a 600 MWe tangentially-fired lignite boiler was retrofitted using air-staged combustion technology. Numerical simulations were conducted to study and compare the combustion and NOx emission characteristics of the original and retrofitted boiler. Different over-fired air ratios were tested in optimization simulations. Results showed that the retrofit reduced NOx emission by approximately 40%. An over-fired air ratio of 20% was found to be the most economical case, while a ratio of 25% was the most environmentally friendly. The results provide valuable insights for the retrofit and practical operation of similar lignite-fired boilers.

Physicochemical properties, combustion kinetics and thermodynamics of oxidized lignite

Mingqiang Gao et al.

Summary: The surface functional groups and pore structures of lignite oxidized at temperatures below 190 degrees C were studied, and the kinetics and thermodynamics of lignite combustion were analyzed. The results indicate that oxidation damages the pore structure and combustion performance of lignite, and thus should be avoided during storage, while the pore structure of oxidized lignite can be adjusted to enhance its combustion performance.

Enhancement Mechanism of Minerals on Lignite-Water Molecule Interactions

Ying Yue Teng et al.

Summary: The effects of removal and introduction of inherent minerals on the water reabsorption performance of coal samples were systematically investigated. It was found that the removal of inherent minerals significantly reduces the hygroscopic performance, but the pore structure becomes more developed and the surface oxygen-containing functional groups are more exposed after chemical treatment, leading to an increase in the equilibrium adsorbed moisture content (EMC). The interaction between lignite and water molecules is weakened by the removal of inherent minerals, but enhanced by the interaction between oxygen-containing functional groups on the surface of lignite and residual ash.
