Microstructural and mechanical investigations on the heat treatment rejuvenation of a long-term service-exposed GTD-111 Ni-based superalloy

Ali Geranmayeh et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effect of various rejuvenation heat treatments on microstructural changes and high temperature-low stress creep properties of service-exposed GTD-111 turbine blades. It was found that a proper selection of solution temperature, cooling rate, and aging heat treatment can restore the microstructure and mechanical properties of a service-exposed blade close to an un-exposed condition. The optimum restoration parameters were found to be full solution at 1190 degrees C for 2 h (cooling rate 14 degrees C/ min) + aging at 845 degrees C for 24 h (air cooling).

Numerical investigation of crack initiation in high-pressure gas turbine blade subjected to thermal-fluid-mechanical low-cycle fatigue

Duy-Ta Vo et al.

Summary: A thermo-fluid-structural analysis procedure was proposed to investigate the lifespan of a gas turbine blade. The temperature and pressure data from computational fluid dynamics simulations were used to calculate strain and stress. Fatigue analysis was conducted to estimate blade life and predict crack positions. The results showed that inefficient cooling led to blade overheating in certain regions, and thermal stress contributed more to the blade stress compared to pressure force. Cracks were predicted to appear at different locations after a certain number of start-stop cycles, consistent with observed fatigue life.

Coupled aerothermal-mechanical analysis in single crystal double wall transpiration cooled gas turbine blades with a large film hole density

Matthew Courtis et al.

Summary: Increasing gas turbine efficiency requires advancements in turbine blade cooling technology. Double wall transpiration cooling (DWTC) offers enhanced thermal protection with modest coolant flows. This paper investigates a transpiration cooled double wall turbine blade design using computational fluid dynamics, heat transfer theory, and stress analysis. The study finds that a system with high porosity displays improved cooling effectiveness and reduces thermal stresses compared to systems with modest outer wall porosity.

Crystal plasticity analysis of fatigue-creep behavior at cooling holes in single crystal Nickel based gas turbine blade components

Christos Skamniotis et al.

Summary: We developed a crystal plasticity finite element framework to analyze slip localization and fatigue-creep behavior at cooling holes of single crystal Nickel based components. The slip rate consists of a thermally activated dislocation glide rate dominating at moderate/low temperatures and/or high stresses, and a climb rate dominating at high temperatures. Our study reveals the importance of plastic and creep anisotropy, and proposes new avenues for optimizing hole shape to minimize slip activity. This research bears significance for the broader material science, high temperature, and fatigue communities.

Numerical study on the influence of coolant temperature, pressure, and thermal barrier coating thickness on heat transfer in high-pressure blades

Duy-Tan Vo et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of thermal barrier coating thickness and coolant on the heat transfer in turbine blades. The results show that the leading tip, trailing tip, platform, and leading edge regions have higher thermal stresses. Coolants with higher temperature are less effective in cooling the blade, and the coolant temperature has a significant impact on the blade temperature.

Multiscale analysis of thermomechanical stresses in double wall transpiration cooling systems for gas turbine blades

Christos Skamniotis et al.

Summary: DWTC technology utilizes double walls to increase gas turbine efficiency, requiring stress evaluation, thermodynamic modeling, and system optimization to address fatigue and ratchetting. Stress concentration factors are influenced by geometric parameters, with biaxial stresses beneficial for critical cooling holes but detrimental for impingement holes and pedestals, which can be balanced through optimal wall thickness ratio.

Summary: Double wall transpiration cooling systems allow for increased operating temperature of gas turbines, but structural integrity implications need to be evaluated. The study highlights the importance of an inner cool wall for enhancing aerothermal performance, while also noting that it can increase compression in the hot outer wall. By using a thinner inner wall, critical compressive stresses in the hot wall can be relieved.

Summary: This paper introduces a method to analyze the lifetime variation of thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) under different working conditions, combining probabilistic methods and lifetime prediction models. The performance of TBCs is studied by setting failure criteria and calculating failure probabilities. Experimental results show that the predictive failure probabilities of TBCs under furnace isothermal cycling are 0.1% at 300 cycles, and the maximum failure probabilities of TBCs under a hot gas stream increase with time.
