Quantitative assessment of machine-learning segmentation of battery electrode materials for active material quantification

Josh J. Bailey et al.

Summary: X-ray computed tomography (CT) is a valuable tool for studying battery electrode microstructures, but reliable segmentation is crucial. This study explores different approaches to using accessible machine-learning segmentation software to segment open-source lithium-ion battery (LIB) electrode tomograms, with the aim of minimizing variation in quantifying the active material volume fraction between users. Manual training on seven cross-sectional slices (<5%) of a tomogram is identified as the optimal balance between variance and user interaction, where 10-25% of each slice was trained. Comparisons with focused-ion beam/scanning electron microscopy slice-and-view tomography show that this approach reduces variation in active material volume fraction compared to unsupervised techniques. The study also demonstrates the efficacy of the optimized approach in quantifying active material volume fractions in cutting-edge LIB electrodes.

Temperature-induced micropore structure alteration of raw coal and its implications for optimizing the degassing temperature in pore characterization

Kai Wang et al.

Summary: Setting a reasonable degassing temperature is crucial for conducting low-temperature nitrogen adsorption experiments and accurately determining pore structure. This study investigates the dynamic variations in nanopore structure of low-metamorphic coal under different degassing temperature scenarios. The results show that the degassing temperature affects the attributes of low-metamorphic coal determined by low-pressure gas adsorption, with micropores being the most sensitive component.

Pore structure evolution and oxidation characteristic change of coal treated with liquid carbon dioxide and liquid nitrogen

Haihui Xin et al.

Summary: This study investigated the changes in pore structure and oxidation properties of coal treated with liquid carbon dioxide and liquid nitrogen. The results showed that the matrix of coal shrank and the pore and crack increased after being soaked in liquid CO2 and liquid N2. The oxygen absorption capacity of the coal also increased, especially when soaked in liquid N2. The changes in pore structure promoted oxygen absorption and led to an increase in spontaneous combustion and reignition tendency. The study provides valuable information for controlling coal spontaneous combustion when using liquid CO2 and liquid N2.

Quantitative characterization of the pore volume fractal dimensions for three kinds of liquid nitrogen frozen coal and its enlightenment to coalbed methane exploitation

Lei Qin et al.

Summary: Liquid nitrogen fracturing technology is crucial for improving the permeability of coal seams and enhancing unconventional natural gas extraction. Research has shown that freezing coal with liquid nitrogen can effectively expand the coal pores, thereby promoting the migration and drainage of coalbed methane. These findings have significant implications for further research on liquid nitrogen fracturing technology.

Experimental study of effect of liquid nitrogen cold soaking on coal pore structure and fractal characteristics

Shumin Liu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the pore structure and fractal characteristics of different coal qualities (anthracite, bituminous coal, and lignite) under liquid nitrogen cold soaking. The study examined the variations in BET specific surface area, BJH total hole, and adsorption pore specific surface area with liquid nitrogen cold soaking times. The results showed that bituminous coal had the highest internal micropore content and the largest adsorption space for gas, followed by anthracite and lignite. The findings provide theoretical and experimental support for the application of liquid nitrogen to increase the permeability of coal seams.

?CT quantitative assessment of the pore-fracture structures and permeability behaviors of long-flame coal treated by infrared rapid heating

Mingqiu Wu et al.

Summary: An infrared rapid heating apparatus was used to heat coal samples at different temperatures, and high-precision micro-CT scanning was employed to establish a three-dimensional pore-fracture structure model. The results showed that the number of pore fractures and throats reached a maximum at 200 degrees C, and the pore and fracture structures in coal tended to develop more with increasing temperature. Moreover, the study found that the fractal dimension and porosity of coal increased significantly with temperature, and the interconnection between pores and fissures caused by temperature increase led to an increase in connectivity and permeability.

Full-scale pore structure characterization of different rank coals and its impact on gas adsorption capacity: A theoretical model and experimental study

Zhongbei Li et al.

Summary: This study quantitatively investigated the relationship between microscopic pore properties and CBM storage using high-pressure isothermal gas adsorption experiments and microscopic pore structure characterization methods. The results show that there are significant differences in the microscopic properties and adsorption capacities of differently ranked coal samples, and the adsorption capacities exhibit an asymmetric U-shaped trend with increasing coal metamorphism. The Langmuir volume theoretically calculated using the new method agrees well with experimental results, indicating the predictive capability of this theoretical model for gas adsorption capacity.

Classification methods of pore structures in coal: A review and new insight

Biao Hu et al.

Summary: The pore structures in coal are crucial for the occurrence and migration of coalbed methane (CBM), which plays a significant role in CBM extraction, utilization, and coal mining disaster prevention. Existing pore classification methods for coal have their drawbacks, thus this paper systematically reviews previous methods and proposes a new pore classification based on the characteristics of CH4 occurrence and migration in coal. This new method categorizes pore structures into four types and provides a more intuitive understanding of CBM occurrence and migration.

Weile Geng et al.

Summary: The study revealed that the proportion of macropores in coal increased while the proportion of mesopores decreased after CH4 or CO2 treatment, leading to a looser coal structure. The microcrystalline structure parameters also changed significantly, indicating the evolution of coal pore structures under long-term gas adsorption.

Research on the evolution of pore and fracture structures during spontaneous combustion of coal based on CT 3D reconstruction

Lulu Sun et al.

Summary: In this study, a self-built high-temperature tube furnace was used to heat coal samples at different temperatures and gas atmospheres in order to investigate the evolution of pore and fracture structures during spontaneous combustion of coal. X-ray CT technology was utilized to scan the coal samples and extract the three-dimensional pore structure and equivalent pore network model. The results showed that the porosity and fractal dimension of coal samples heat-treated in an air atmosphere were significantly higher than those heat-treated in a nitrogen atmosphere. The connectivity and permeability of the coal samples were also affected, with better connectivity observed in the air atmosphere. Nitrogen injection during heating had a stronger inhibitory effect on the development of pore and fracture structures, leading to decreased permeability. This research suggests that nitrogen injection can be an effective strategy to prevent and control coal spontaneous combustion.
