Techno-economic analysis and optimal sizing of a battery-based and hydrogen-based standalone photovoltaic/wind hybrid system for rural electrification in Cameroon based on meta-heuristic techniques

Clint Ameri Wankouo Ngouleu et al.

Summary: In developing nations, hybrid power systems are seen as a suitable solution for distributing power to rural and off-grid locations. This paper compares meta-heuristics optimization techniques for designing optimal photovoltaic/wind/fuel cell and photovoltaic/wind/battery hybrid systems in Kousseri, Cameroon. The study finds that the cuckoo search algorithm performs the best and that the photovoltaic/wind/battery standalone hybrid system is the most reliable and cost-effective option for Kousseri.

Latest Energy Storage Trends in Multi-Energy Standalone Electric Vehicle Charging Stations: A Comprehensive Study

Amad Ali et al.

Summary: The popularity of electric vehicles is on the rise due to their environmentally friendly operation and high mileage. However, charging these vehicles from the grid supply system during peak hours can result in high costs. To address this issue, many prefer EV charging stations integrated with hybrid renewable energy resources. These stations can be connected to the grid or operated in isolation, requiring storage systems. This paper discusses different types of energy storage systems and their configurations for standalone EV charging stations, highlighting their pros and cons, as well as expectations for future energy storage systems.

Life-cycle assessment and life-cycle cost assessment of power batteries for all-electric vessels for short-sea navigation

Maja Percic et al.

Summary: This research compares the conventional power system (diesel engine) with an alternative power system using batteries to identify convenient technology for zero-emission shipping based on environmental and economic criteria. The environmental and economic performance of different powering options is analyzed through Life-Cycle Assessment (LCA) and Life-Cycle Cost Assessment (LCCA). The study highlights the electrification with a Lithium-ion battery as the most suitable alternative for ro-ro passenger ships in Croatian short-sea navigation.

Stochastic operation of energy constrained microgrids considering battery degradation

Per Aaslid et al.

Summary: For power systems with high penetration of variable renewable generation, electric energy storage is essential to balance supply and demand and improve system security. This paper introduces a linear approximation model for battery state-of-charge degradation, combined with cycling degradation, to prolong battery lifetime.

Evaluating the Economic Performance of a Pure Electric and Diesel Vessel: The Case of E-ferry in Denmark

Annie Kortsari et al.

Summary: This research presents the E-ferry, a pure electric ferry for medium range routes, and evaluates its economic performance compared to other technologies. The evaluation shows that while the construction cost of the E-ferry is higher, it significantly reduces energy demand. The E-ferry achieves cost parity with diesel-based vessels between 5.2 and 3.6 years, showing potential for sustainable ferry operations.

Pooling the cable: A techno-economic feasibility study of integrating offshore floating photovoltaic solar technology within an offshore wind park

S. Z. M. Golroodbari et al.

Summary: This paper evaluates the feasibility of adding an offshore floating solar farm to an existing Dutch offshore wind farm in the North Sea, considering factors such as cable capacity, weather data, and subsidy measures. The study shows that while there is some forced curtailment due to cable capacity, the optimal PV capacity decreases with higher PV costs, but increases with more favorable subsidies.

Decarbonising inland ship power system: Alternative solution and assessment method

Ailong Fan et al.

Summary: The shipping industry is transforming towards greening, decarbonisation, and electrification in the context of harsh emission control and ecological environment protection. Research indicates that using battery power and hybrid power can reduce the lifetime CO2 emissions and costs of inland ships, which is significant for guiding the low-carbon development of inland ship power.

Accelerating deployment of offshore wind energy alter wind climate and reduce future power generation potentials

Naveed Akhtar et al.

Summary: The European Union has set ambitious CO2 reduction targets and emphasized the importance of offshore wind energy production in northern European waters. Research shows that as offshore wind farms become larger and more clustered, wake effects become increasingly significant, leading to wind speed deficits, decreased power generation efficiency, and increased energy production costs.
