Zhan Liu et al.

Summary: In this study, a -80 degree Celsius ultralow-temperature cascade refrigeration system (CRS) is developed, utilizing environmentally friendly refrigerants R290 and R170 in the high-temperature and low-temperature cycles. The experimental investigation shows that the CRS has the capability of achieving temperature pull-down and stable operation.

Design and optimisation of novel cascade mixed refrigerant cycles for LNG production-Part II: Novel cascade configurations

Fernando Almeida-Trasvina et al.

Summary: This study develops three novel cascade cycle options based on structural modifications to achieve energy savings in liquefied natural gas (LNG) production. The results show that the structural changes enable the novel cascade cycles to achieve energy savings of up to 15.6% compared to the Propane Pre-cooled Mixed Refrigerant (C3MR) cycle, and up to 5.9% compared to the Dual Mixed Refrigerant (DMR) cycle. These energy savings come with minimal added process complexity.

Performance analysis of a modified ejector-enhanced auto-cascade refrigeration cycle

Shuilong Liu et al.

Summary: A modified ejector-enhanced auto-cascade refrigeration cycle with R290/R170 is proposed, which utilizes an additional expansion valve and internal heat exchanger located after condenser. Thermodynamic analyses based on energy and exergy methods show that the modified cycle has higher COP and volumetric refrigeration capacity compared to the basic cycle. Moreover, the exergy destruction in the modified cycle is reduced, indicating its energy-saving advantage and potential application in low-temperature refrigeration.

Thermodynamic analysis of a novel vapor-injection Joule-Thomson refrigeration cycle with a binary hydrocarbon mixture for-86? freezer

Jiarui Liu et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a novel vapor-injection Joule-Thomson refrigeration cycle with mixed-refrigerant. The introduction of the compressor with vapor-injection can reduce the pressure ratio of each compression stage, thus reducing the compressor power and discharge temperature. The thermodynamic analysis results show that the performance of the novel cycle is better than that of the basic Joule-Thomson cycle.

Experimental performance analysis of a packaged R290 refrigeration unit retrofitted with R170 for ultra-low temperature freezing

Juan Carlos Rodriguez-Criado et al.

Summary: The interest in ultra-low temperature refrigeration systems has increased due to the demand for preserving mRNA vaccines. However, there is a lack of reliable experimental data for these systems. This study proposes a retrofit ultra-low temperature refrigeration unit based on an indirect cascade system and evaluates its performance under different operating conditions. The results show successful behavior with a COP ranging from 0.6 to 1.6 for cold room temperatures between -80°C and -65°C.

The effective refrigeration temperature zone expressed by partial molar enthalpy difference of each component in mixed-refrigerant Joule-Thomson refrigerators

Yunxiao Wang et al.

Summary: Mixed-refrigerant Joule-Thomson refrigerators are widely used in various fields for refrigeration effects in different temperature zones. The contribution of components to the isothermal throttling effect can be characterized by the partial molar enthalpy difference, which determines the effective refrigeration temperature zone of the component.

E. G. Bychkov

Summary: This article discusses the optimal weight of mixed-refrigerant charge for single and multi-stage Joule-Thompson refrigerators operating with natural nitrogen-hydrocarbon mixtures, and presents an analytical method and experimental results. The accuracy of the method depends on calculating thermodynamic properties of mixed refrigerants and considering the shift of circulating composition due to real refrigerators' structural specifics. Using this method can reduce the time and cost of experimental development of new refrigeration equipment.
