Enhancing drought resilience and energy security through complementing hydro by offshore wind power-The case of Brazil

Paula Conde Santos Borba et al.

Summary: By considering the complementarity between offshore wind energy and hydro resources, this study analyzes the integration of wind farms into the existing power system in Brazil and finds a high complementarity between Northeastern wind regimes and most hydropower basins. The share of offshore wind energy grows in scenarios with reduced costs, but wind farms are part of the optimal system even with the current costs. The Brazilian power system with offshore wind farms can eliminate 54.4 Mton CO2eq/year (97% of current power sector emissions) without additional electricity storage.

Offshore wind and solar complementarity in Brazil: A theoretical and technical potential assessment

Marcolino Matheus de Souza Nascimento et al.

Summary: The onshore generation of wind and solar energy has been developed in Brazil, and offshore and complementary technologies also have great potential. This study evaluates the complementarity of offshore wind and solar energy along the Brazilian coastline and finds that offshore solar energy can effectively supplement the power generation of offshore wind energy.
