Frequency stability enhancement of an islanded microgrid: A fractional-order virtual synchronous generator

Bo Long et al.

Summary: In this study, a novel fractional-order model predictive controller (FOMPC) is proposed for a fractional-order virtual synchronous generator controller (FOVSG) to alleviate the output power oscillation and achieve an optimal frequency and voltage regulation for an islanded microgrid. Hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) experiments were carried out to demonstrate the superiority of FOMPC-FOVSG over existing VSG techniques under several scenarios.

Enhanced Transient Angle Stability Control of Grid-Forming Converter Based on Virtual Synchronous Generator

Meng Chen et al.

Summary: This article investigates the transient angle stability control of the virtual synchronous generator (VSG). Two possible VSG emulation methods, power-emulation and torque-emulation, are compared from the perspective of transient characteristics. The transient of the VSG internal voltage and its impact on the transient angle stability are quantitatively studied, and an enhanced VSG controller is proposed. The analysis and effectiveness of the enhanced VSG method are validated by experimental results.

Angle stability enhancement of off-grid microgrids based on model predictive control

Qi Geng et al.

Summary: The lack of inertia and damping in converters of distributed generation can be compensated by the virtual synchronous generator (VSG) control, which mimics the synchronous generator (SG). However, the frequency regulation differences between VSG and SG may cause the synchronous operation of SG and multi-VSG to be disrupted after a large disturbance. This study establishes the rotor motion equations for the combinations of SG and VSG, as well as multi-VSG, based on the VSG common reference frame. The angle stability of an off-grid microgrid is analyzed, and the influence of the controlled current source model of the energy storage system (ESS) on transient stability is investigated. A model predictive control (MPC) method using ESS is proposed to enhance the angle stability of the off-grid microgrid, and simulation results confirm its effectiveness.

Summary: This study focuses on the impact of inner voltage and current controls on the VSG system, as well as the constraints on bandwidths of cascaded controls as power ratings increase. A linearized model is derived to accurately depict VSG system characteristics and investigate the change in damping and synchronizing torque components under low control bandwidths. The proposed model is general and can be used for designing control parameters for VSG systems of any power ratings.
