Comparison of CO2 and water as working fluids for an enhanced geothermal system in the Gonghe Basin, northwest China

Chenghao Zhong et al.

Summary: This study presents a realistic physical model for geothermal energy production in the Gonghe Basin of China. The results show that using CO2 instead of water as a working fluid in the enhanced geothermal system (EGS) is more efficient, although it leads to a significant decrease in production temperature in the wellbore.

Enhanced heat extraction performance from deep buried U-shaped well using the high-pressure jet grouting technology

Han Yu et al.

Summary: To improve heat production efficiency of the single-well geothermal heating system, high-pressure jet grouting technology was used to build an artificial jet grouting column near the horizontal well segment. Numerical simulations showed that the average annual heat production rate was improved by about 22% by building a 1.0 m radius artificial jet grouting column near the wellbore. This proposed method is a promising strategy for enhancing thermal output in the deep buried U-shaped well system, with sensitivity analyses suggesting that the radius of the jet grouting column has a greater effect on heat production rate and outlet temperature compared to the thermal conductivity.

Comparative study on heat extraction from Soultz-sous-Fore?ts geothermal field using supercritical carbon dioxide and water as the working fluid

Mrityunjay Singh et al.

Summary: This study developed a field-scale hydrothermal model to investigate the heat extraction potential from the Soultz-sous-Forets geothermal reservoir using CO2 and water as working fluids. By considering the reservoir response and wellbore heat exchange, the study provides a better understanding of the heat extraction mechanism. The results show that the wellbore effect is significantly higher than the reservoir response to production temperature, and lowering the injection temperature can enhance heat extraction potential with minimal impact on thermal breakthrough.
