Asphaltene deposition under different injection gases and reservoir conditions

Ruiying Xiong et al.

Summary: This paper studied the impact of different injection gases (CO2, CH4, and N2) on asphaltene deposition characteristics under reservoir conditions. It was found that the effect of different injection gases on asphaltene deposition is differently related to the oil-gas miscibility state. CO2 and CH4 injection lead to asphaltene precipitation and deposition, while N2 injection has a minor influence on crude oil's stability.

Microstructure of Heavy Oil Components and Mechanism of Influence on Viscosity of Heavy Oil

Qiuxia Wang et al.

Summary: Research shows that the high viscosity and poor fluidity of heavy oil are caused by its complex composition, making it crucial to understand the viscous mechanism of heavy oil. By measuring and analyzing the molecular weight, element composition, and polarity of each SARA component in heavy oil samples, it is found that an increase in the aggregate contents of resins and asphaltene leads to an increase in the viscosity of heavy oil. These resins and asphaltene have high polarity, heteroatomic content, and complex molecular structure, which are key factors affecting the viscosity of heavy oil. Simulation calculations and modeling provide a quantitative reference for understanding the viscosity mechanism of heavy oil by obtaining the microstructure and molecular formula of each component of different heavy oils. While there is little difference in the elemental composition of resins and asphaltene, the difference in structure is the crucial factor leading to the difference in their properties and the viscosity of heavy oils.

The deposition of asphaltenes under high-temperature and high- pressure (HTHP) conditions

Rui-Ying Xiong et al.

Summary: In this study, the factors affecting asphaltenes deposition in high-temperature and high-pressure wells were investigated using customized backscattered light and PVT equipment. The results revealed a linear relationship between temperature and asphaltene precipitation within a specific temperature range, with a decrease in temperature accelerating the precipitation. However, pressure and gas-oil ratio had more pronounced effects on deposition, with pressure depletion causing asphaltenes to precipitate and form flocs below the bubble point, and an increase in gas-oil ratio leading to more severe deposition and relocation of asphaltenes to deeper well sections.

Influence of asphaltene structural parameters on solubility

Ronald Nguele et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the influence of asphaltene's structural parameters, including aromatic sheet diameter and aromaticity, on its solubility. The results show that aromatic sheet diameter increases with aromaticity and is inversely proportional to hydrogen bonding capability. In terms of dispersant polarity, 7C-7C interactions dominate and contribute to better asphaltene stability, while nonpolar precipitants exhibit the opposite trend. The study suggests the use of polar inhibitors to inhibit the aggregation of asphaltene with large aromatic sheet diameter.
