Classification of lattice defects and the microscopic origin of p-type conductivity of Sb2Se3 solar cell absorber with varying Al2O3-layer thicknesses

Huafei Guo et al.

Summary: Based on first-principles calculations, this study reveals the origin of p-type conductivity and the roles of Al and O in enhancing hole concentration in Sb2Se3 thin films. A new class of low-energy defects with shallow acceptor levels is presented, while the concentration of holes induced by intrinsic and extrinsic defects is calculated and discussed. The findings provide an explanation for the experimental observation of increased hole concentration after Al2O3 capping and offer insights into the defect chemistry and physics of Sb2Se3 thin films. Additionally, the effects of Al2O3 layers with varying thicknesses on the crystallinity, orientation, and electrical properties of Sb2Se3 films are investigated. Finally, a solar cell efficiency of 6.87% is achieved without further optimization based on the FTO/CdS (CBD)/Sb2Se3/Al2O3/Au structure.

Effect of thickness of antimony selenide film on its photoelectric properties and microstructure

Xin-Li Liu et al.

Summary: A combination of the Levenberg-Marquardt method and spectral fitting method (LM-SFM) is used to investigate the effects of film thickness on the refractive index (RI), absorption coefficient, optical band gap, Wemple-DiDomenico parameters, dielectric constant, and optical electronegativity of Sb2Se3 films. The results show that the RI and absorption coefficient of the films increase with thickness, while the optical band gap decreases. X-ray diffractometer (XRD), energy dispersive x-ray spectrometer (EDS), Mott-Davis state density model, and Raman microstructure analysis are used to explain the reasons behind the changes in the optical and electrical properties of the films.

Carrier Transport Enhancement Mechanism in Highly Efficient Antimony Selenide Thin-Film Solar Cell

Yandi Luo et al.

Summary: By introducing aluminum (Al3+) cation into the CdS buffer layer, this study improves the heterojunction interface of an Sb2Se3 solar cell. The energy band alignment of the Sb2Se3/CdS:Al heterojunction is modified from a cliff-like structure to a spike-like structure. As a result, the heterojunction interface engineering suppresses recombination losses and strengthens carrier transport, leading to a high efficiency of 8.41% for the substrate-structured Sb2Se3 solar cell. This study proposes a facile strategy for interfacial treatment and elucidates the related carrier transport enhancement mechanism, paving a bright avenue to overcome the efficiency bottleneck of Sb2Se3 thin-film solar cells.
