Mechanical stress and morphology evolution in RuO2 thin film electrodes during lithiation and delithiation

Lin Xu et al.

Summary: RuO2 is a promising electrode material for thin film lithium-ion batteries, due to its excellent properties such as large volumetric charge capacity, high rate capability, and excellent cyclability. In this study, the evolution of mechanical stress during lithiation and delithiation of RuO2 was investigated and compared with Si and Ge thin film electrodes. The results show that the behavior of the mechanical stress in RuO2 is fundamentally different, mainly due to the reversibility of the solid electrolyte interface (SEI) formation on RuO2. The small tensile stress during delithiation of RuO2 allows for better accommodation of the stress induced by volume changes, which may contribute to its better cyclability compared to Si and Ge films.

Electrochemically Controlled Reversible Formation of Organized Channel Arrays in Nanoscale-Thick RuO2 Films: Implications for Mechanically Stable Thin Films and Microfluidic Devices

Lin Xu et al.

Summary: Arrays of notched holes fabricated on RuO2 films can initiate and guide crack formation during electrochemical delithiation, leading to the formation of organized microchannel arrays. The width of the channels is dependent on the hole spacing and can be controlled by the state of lithiation. This guided crack formation significantly improves the overall mechanical stability of the films and has potential applications in microfluidic devices and sensors.

Lithium-Aluminum-Phosphate coating enables stable 4.6 V cycling performance of LiCoO2 at room temperature and beyond

Xiao Wang et al.

Summary: By using a surface engineering strategy with lithium-aluminum-phosphate composite coating materials, stable cycling of LCO at 4.6 V (vs. Li/Li+) was achieved, preventing direct contact between the cathode and electrolyte, reducing active material loss without hindering lithium ion migration. The doping layer formed after calcination includes phosphorus and aluminum, helping maintain surface structure and stabilize oxygen atoms around the particle surface, showing high ion mobility when operated at 4.6 V (vs. Li/Li+).
