Cryptic Plasmodium inui and Plasmodium fieldi Infections Among Symptomatic Malaria Patients in Thailand

Chaturong Putaporntip et al.

Summary: This study identifies the presence of simian Plasmodium species, including newly identified P. inui and P. fieldi, in blood samples of malaria patients in Thailand. Although these species have a low prevalence and mostly coexist with other Plasmodium species in humans, P. inui is widely distributed in Thailand.

A discrete dielectrophoresis device for the separation of malaria-infected cells

Nitipong Panklang et al.

Summary: This paper presents a continuous method for separating malaria-infected red blood cells from normal blood cells using discrete dielectrophoresis (DEP) in a microfluidic device. The effectiveness of the method was demonstrated by enriching the infected cells at the device output, which was 3000 times higher than the input concentration. This method is highly effective and can greatly facilitate the detection of infected cells for malaria patient identification.

β-Dispersion of blood during sedimentation

Ahmet C. Sabuncu et al.

Summary: This study experimentally examined the aggregation of human red blood cells using Hetastrach as an aggregation agent, measuring parameters such as impedance and sedimentation kinetics to distinguish different aggregation states in blood. Theoretical modeling was used to analyze the complex permittivity of red blood cell aggregates at various concentrations of Hetastrach, providing insights into the dynamics of aggregation and sedimentation processes.

Electromechanical Analysis of Red Blood Cell Under AC Electric Field

Boonchai Techaumnat et al.

Summary: This article presents a numerical analysis of the electromechanics of red blood cells under electric field conditions in a microchannel. The study reveals that DEP characteristics of the cells are highly dependent on cell orientation and distance from the electrode, and the DEP forces change direction at different field frequencies. The experimentally observed re-orientation of red blood cells is correlated with the calculated DEP behavior.
