Nanophotonics-inspired all-silicon waveguide platforms for terahertz integrated systems

Ratmalgre A. S. D. Koala et al.

Summary: Recent advances in silicon microphotonics have enabled the development of novel THz devices based on dielectric waveguides. The use of all-Si waveguides has allowed THz systems to transition from discrete components to integrated circuits, thanks to their low-loss, low dispersion, and single-mode waveguiding capabilities. This review article reevaluates the evolution stages of THz integrated circuits and systems using all-Si waveguides.

Propagation of Terahertz Pulses in Photonic Crystal-Based Rib Silicon Waveguides

Hassan Pakarzadeh et al.

Summary: A photonic crystal-based rib silicon waveguide was designed for THz applications, with simulations conducted on dispersion curve and effective index for different rib heights in the 30-35 μm wavelength range. Nonlinear effects on pulse propagation were investigated by calculating dispersion coefficients and solving NLSE. The results showed minimal distortion in pulse propagation for lengths less than 1 cm, with changes in pulse shape and spectrum for longer lengths.

Tunable Terahertz Wavelength Conversion Based on Optofluidic Infiltrated Rib Silicon Waveguides

H. Pakarzadeh et al.

Summary: A rib silicon waveguide based on the photonic crystal idea is designed for tunable wavelength conversion for THz wave generation. By changing structural parameters and infiltration of optical fluids, linear and nonlinear characteristics of the waveguide are controlled to achieve tunable sources in the THz region. The simulation results show that the maximum converted wavelength is 326.17 μm with a low loss of less than 0.8 (dB)/(cm).
