Raphael Riasse et al.

Summary: This study compares the evaluation methods and results of oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) electrocatalysts using rotating disk electrode (RDE), gas diffusion electrode (GDE), and small unit PEMFC (DC). The results show that the GDE has the advantages of wide applicability, ease of use, and requiring less electrocatalyst.

A Strategy for Drastic Improvement in the Durability of Pt/C and PtCo/C Alloy Catalysts for the Oxygen Reduction Reaction by Melamine Surface Modification

Hideo Daimon et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates a significant improvement in the durability of Pt/C catalyst and PtCo/C alloy catalyst for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) through melamine surface modification. The addition of melamine suppresses the increase in catalyst particle size, mitigating the loss in electrochemical surface area. Moreover, melamine addition also suppresses PtCo alloy catalyst dealloying during the accelerated durability test (ADT), allowing for high ORR mass activity even after the ADT.

Challenges in applying highly active Pt-based nanostructured catalysts for oxygen reduction reactions to fuel cell vehicles

Kensaku Kodama et al.

Summary: Progress has been made in the development of Pt-based nanocatalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction over the past 30 years, with some now in commercial production for PEFCs. However, further improvements in catalytic activity are needed. State-of-the-art catalysts have potential to enhance energy conversion efficiencies and reduce platinum usage in PEFCs, but technical challenges remain for their application in fuel cell vehicles, such as high power density, practical durability, and efficiency.
