Influence of shape and charged conditions of nanopores on their ionic current rectification, electroosmotic flow, and selectivity

Po-Yen Chuang et al.

Summary: The electrokinetic behaviors of a nanopore, such as ionic current rectification, selectivity, and electroosmotic flow, have significant influence on various applications. The shape and charged conditions of the nanopore greatly affect its performance, which is studied through comparison of six types of charged nanopores. The internal volume of the nanopore is found to be the most important factor in determining its behavior, while selectivity depends on both the internal volume and the fraction of the narrow region. The nature of charge and the geometry of the nanopore also affect its velocity profile, along with the salt concentration.

Electrokinetic ion rectification in the coupling asymmetric charged nanochannel

Zheng Liu et al.

Summary: Ion transport in nanochannels is studied with the aim of understanding the impact of asymmetric geometry and surface charge on ion rectification performance. Low surface charge gradient enhances ion rectification, while high surface charge gradient leads to anomalous electrokinetic behavior that deteriorates ion rectification. The coordination mechanism of asymmetric geometry and surface charge determines the enhancement-deterioration transition threshold. This work provides valuable guidance for the design of nanofluidic energy devices.

Ion current rectification in asymmetric nanochannels: effects of nanochannel shape and surface charge

Nan Qiao et al.

Summary: The influence of nanochannel shape and surface charge on ion transport and ion current rectification (ICR) performance of asymmetric nanochannels was studied. It was found that changes in spatial size were not beneficial for improving ICR performance, with the conical nanochannel exhibiting the best performance. Moreover, specified asymmetric surface charge on the outer wall surface enhanced the corresponding ICR performance, while the length of the nanochannel determined whether the outer or inner wall surface charge dominated. The results provide essential insights and guidelines for the design and optimization of biological sensors and nanofluidic devices.
