Optimization of acetamide based deep eutectic solvents with dual cations for high performance and low temperature-tolerant aqueous zinc ion batteries via tuning the ratio of co-solvents

Ting -Yu Chen et al.

Summary: In this work, a novel acetamide-based deep eutectic solvent (DES) with Zn2+/ Li+ dual ions is designed and its physicochemical properties are tuned by adjusting the co-solvents (water and acetonitrile). The addition of acetonitrile facilitates the formation of solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) on the zinc anode, which enhances the cycling stability. Zinc ion batteries (ZIB) assembled with the DES demonstrate good performance at both room temperature and low temperature.

Critical roles of metal-organic frameworks in improving the Zn anode in aqueous zinc-ion batteries

Mohan Gopalakrishnan et al.

Summary: Rechargeable aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs) have gained much interest due to their high energy density, safety, and low cost. However, issues such as anode side reactions, passivation, corrosion, hydrogen evolution, and Zn dendrite growth continue to hinder their widespread application. This review presents metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) as potential solutions to these problems by enhancing the performance of Zn anode materials, electrolytes, and electrolyte additives through their porous structure and active sites. The review also proposes directions for the rational design of MOF-based Zn anodes and understanding the mechanisms affecting Zn2+ solvation in high-performance AZIBs, aiming to extend the cycling lifetime and promote the commercialization of AZIBs.

Reshaping the electrolyte structure and interface chemistry for stable aqueous zinc batteries

Guoqiang Ma et al.

Summary: In this study, the stability of metallic zinc anode in aqueous batteries was significantly improved by using a non-concentrated aqueous zinc trifluoromethanesulfonate electrolyte with 1,2-dimethoxyethane additive. The introduction of DME disrupted the original hydrogen-bond network of water and created a unique Zn2+-solvation structure, effectively suppressing water-induced side reactions. The in-situ formation of an organic-inorganic hybrid interphase on the zinc anode further prevented water penetration and dendrite growth. This novel electrolyte enabled the zinc anodes to achieve unprecedented cycling stability and high reversibility.
