Simultaneous immobilization of arsenic, lead, and cadmium in soil by magnesium-aluminum modified biochar: Influences of organic acids, aging, and rainfall

Cheng Peng et al.

Summary: Magnesium-aluminum modified biochar (MAB) is effective in immobilizing arsenic (As), lead (Pb), and cadmium (Cd) in soil. This study investigated the effects of organic acids, dry-wet cycles, freeze-thaw cycles, and rainfall on the immobilization of As, Pb, and Cd by MAB. The results showed that oxalic acid reduced the immobilization efficiencies of As, Pb, and Cd, while humic acid reduced the efficiency of Pb but increased that of Cd. The immobilization mechanisms of MAB-5 on the metals were mainly through ion exchange and surface-complexation. Immobilization efficiencies decreased in dry-wet cycles but increased in freeze-thaw cycles, and after simulated rainfall, MAB retained more As, Pb, and Cd in the upper soil layer, with higher immobilization efficiency at higher pH.

Narges Esfandiar et al.

Summary: The study found that BFS and CCF demonstrated the highest sorption capacity of all metals (>95% removal) in all systems. However, the presence of other contaminants in solution reduced metals removal for other sorbents, and the removal efficiency ranking among metals was generally Cr-Cu-Pb > Ni > Cd > Zn in single-metal, multi-metal, and multi-contaminant solutions.

Modified chicken manure biochar enhanced the adsorption for Cd2+ in aqueous and immobilization of Cd in contaminated agricultural soil

Lijuan Sun et al.

Summary: Biochar modified with different materials showed improved adsorption capacity for Cd2+. The Cd2+ adsorption kinetics followed a chemisorption process. The Cd2+ adsorption capacity of the modified biochars was higher than that of the pristine biochar. The modified biochars also showed increased contributions of precipitation, complexion, and metal-Cr coordination in Cd2+ adsorption.

The role of interfacial reactions in controlling the distribution of Cd within goethite-humic acid-bacteria composites

Chenchen Qu et al.

Summary: Mineral-organic interfacial reactions play a significant role in the adsorption, distribution, and bioavailability of metal cations in soil systems. The study found that in composites, Cd adsorption is mainly governed by the entropy of Cd adsorption onto the organic fraction. Additionally, modeling suggests that humic acid is the primary scavenger of Cd, while bacteria become important in affecting Cd distribution under lower pH conditions.

Nilusha Ubeynarayana et al.

Summary: The study revealed that chicory and plantain have different abilities to absorb cadmium, with chicory showing higher accumulation potential. There are significant differences in the secretion of organic acids between the two species under different Cd treatments, which further affect the Cd uptake by plant roots. Chicory has lower secretion of fumaric acid and higher secretion of acetic acid, resulting in higher Cd accumulation in the plant.

Remediation of Cd-Contaminated Soil by Modified Nanoscale Zero-Valent Iron: Role of Plant Root Exudates and Inner Mechanisms

Danlian Huang et al.

Summary: In this study, the role of exogenous root exudates and microorganisms in the application of modified nanoscale zero-valent iron (nZVI) for the remediation of cadmium (Cd)-contaminated soil was investigated. It was found that citric acid (CA) can promote the adsorption of Cd by nZVI, but high concentrations have a negative effect. Both in water and soil experiments, low concentrations of CA contributed to the immobilization of Cd, while high concentrations promoted desorption and complex formation, impacting plant uptake of Cd.
