Relationship between the Carbonyl Index (CI) and Fragmentation of Polyolefin Plastics during Aging

Evdokia Syranidou et al.

Summary: The CI-fragmentation relationship can be used to accurately predict the fragmentation potential of polyolefin particles in MP mass balance models. The durability of plastics in the marine environment and the threshold point for the generation of secondary microplastics are still unknown. This study investigated the interaction between environmental parameters and the physicochemical properties of PE and PP films, finding a strong correlation between molecular weight and the generation of microplastics. Additionally, a significant relationship between CI and Feret diameter was identified for PP films weathered on beach sand.

Bioaugmentation of Enterobacter cloacae AKS7 causes an enhanced degradation of low-density polyethylene (LDPE) in soil: a promising approach for the sustainable management of LDPE waste

Ranojit Kumar Sarker et al.

Summary: Enterobacter cloacae AKS7 can be used as a bioaugmenting agent for the degradation of LDPE waste. The addition of AKS7 to soil microcosms resulted in a twofold increase in polymer degradation compared to non-bioaugmented microcosms. The presence of AKS7 also led to an increase in the abundance of LDPE-degrading organisms and enhanced microbial biomass carbon and nitrogen content. Furthermore, bioaugmented microcosms showed increased levels of dehydrogenase and FDA hydrolyzing activity, as well as higher functional richness and evenness, indicating the formation of an enriched ecosystem.

Biodegradation of thermo-oxidative pretreated low-density polyethylene (LDPE) and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) microplastics by Achromobacter denitrificans Ebl13

Mojtaba Maleki Rad et al.

Summary: Microplastics pretreatment is an efficient approach for their bioremediation. Achromobacter denitrificans was isolated from compost and used for biodegradation of thermally-oxidized polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and low-density polyethylene (LDPE). The pretreatment resulted in weight loss, extracellular protein production, pH change, and thermal stability enhancement. Chemical modifications in LDPE were observed, indicating degradation through oxidation and chain fractures. Scanning electron microscopy confirmed degradation of LDPE and PVC through surface alterations.

Current Advances in Biodegradation of Polyolefins

Ni Zhang et al.

Summary: Polyolefins, such as polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), and polystyrene (PS), are commonly used plastics. The excessive use and improper disposal of polyolefins lead to environmental pollution and energy waste. Biodegradation of polyolefins is an environmentally friendly and low-energy consumption approach for plastic degradation. This review discusses the current advances in polyolefin degradation, including isolated and engineered strains, enzymes, and related pathways. Additionally, a novel strategy for polyolefin degradation using artificial microbial consortia is proposed for efficient degradation of polyolefins.
