Acute toxicity and risk assessment of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorooctanesulfonate (PFOS) in tropical cladocerans Moina micrura

Muhammad Raznisyafiq Razak et al.

Summary: Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are receiving global attention due to their toxic and persistent nature in the environment, and their potential as endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) and carcinogenic agents. This study investigated the acute toxicity of two main PFAS, perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorooctanesulfonate (PFOS), using freshwater cladocerans as bioindicators. The results showed that PFOA was more hazardous than PFOS, with lower LC50 values. The findings have significant implications for the risk assessment of PFOS and PFOA in aquatic environments.

Trophic Magnification of Short-Chain Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances in a Terrestrial Food Chain from the Tibetan Plateau

Kai Huang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the occurrence and trophic transfer of short-chain PFASs in a terrestrial food chain and found that PFASs exhibit biomagnification in the food chain. The study also suggested that bird feathers can serve as indicators of PFAS exposure.

Characterization of the distribution, source, and potential ecological risk of perfluorinated alkyl substances (PFASs) in the inland river basin of Longgang District, South China*

Chushan Huang et al.

Summary: This study analyzed 18 PFASs in surface water and sediment samples from the inland river basin in Longgang District in 2017, finding that PFOS, PFOA, and PFBS were the dominant pollutants. The results suggest that more attention should be paid to controlling PFOS in the treatment of pollutants in the inland river basin of Longgang District.

Occurrence and Ecological Risk Assessment of Perfluoroalkyl Substances (PFASs) in Water and Sediment from an Urban River in South China

Yuanyuan Si et al.

Summary: The study detected and quantified seven PFAS compounds in river water and sediment samples collected from a tributary of the Liuxi River near Guangzhou, with 6:2 FTOH and PFHpA being the dominant compounds. Correlation analysis showed a significant positive correlation between selected PFASs, indicating most PFASs in sediment were derived from river water. Ecological risk assessment suggested low risks of the detected PFASs to Daphnia magna in the Liuxi River.
