Cyanobacterial bloom monitoring and assessment in Latin America

Anabella Aguilera et al.

Summary: Cyanobacterial blooms and associated cyanotoxins were reported in freshwater bodies across South America and the Caribbean from 2000 to 2019. Different criteria were used to define blooms, leading to difficulties in estimating their occurrence and associated risks. There were significant variations between countries in terms of studies, monitoring efforts, data accessibility, and regulations, highlighting the need for common criteria and policies. This review serves as a starting point towards developing standardized approaches for cyanobacterial monitoring and risk assessment in Latin America.

Microplastics induce neurotoxicity in aquatic animals at environmentally realistic concentrations: A meta-analysis

Fei Xiong et al.

Summary: This meta-analysis examined the effects of microplastics on neurotransmitter levels in aquatic animals and found that they significantly decrease acetylcholinesterase levels in the brain. However, there was no significant effect on other neurotransmitters. The study also identified particle size and exposure time as important factors in neurotoxicity, while animal species, composition, morphology, and concentration of microplastics had no significant impact. The findings provide scientific evidence for assessing the health risks and neurotoxicity of microplastics in the environment.

Cyanobacterial blooms: A player in the freshwater environmental resistome with public health relevance?

Abigail Volk et al.

Summary: Cyanobacterial harmful algal blooms and their toxins pose threats to ecosystems and public health, and cyanobacteria may also serve as a reservoir for antibiotic resistance genes. This study conducted a literature review and found that cyanobacteria can host antibiotic resistance genes and contribute to their spread through mobile genetic elements.

Predicting human neurotoxicity of propylene glycol methyl ether (PGME) by implementing in vitro neurotoxicity results into toxicokinetic modelling

E. Reale et al.

Summary: Although organic solvents have been associated with CNS toxicity, there is rarely a regulatory requirement for neurotoxicity testing. In this study, a strategy combining in vitro neurotoxicity, in vitro blood-brain barrier (BBB), and in silico toxicokinetic (TK) model was proposed to assess the potential neurotoxicity of organic solvents and predict safe air concentrations. The strategy was applied to propylene glycol methyl ether (PGME), a widely used industrial and consumer product.

Photocatalytic degradation of microcystin-LR using BiVO4photocatalysts under visible light irradiation: modelling by response surface methodology (RSM)

Afshin Ebrahimi et al.

Summary: The synthesis of bismuth vanadate (BiVO4) through hydrothermal method effectively removes microcystin-LR (MC-LR) under visible light. Response Surface Methodology (RSM) analysis reveals that increased contact time and catalyst dose positively enhance the removal efficiency, while pH has a negative effect.

Lesley Jia Wei Pua et al.

Summary: JNK and p38 MAPK signaling pathways play important roles in nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC), promoting tumor processes such as cell proliferation, apoptosis, inflammation, metastasis, and angiogenesis. Although the underlying mechanisms are not fully understood, further research on JNK and p38 MAPK could provide important insights for diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment decision-making in NPC patients.

RAF-MEK-ERK pathway in cancer evolution and treatment

Rahim Ullah et al.

Summary: The RAF-MEK-ERK signaling cascade is a well-characterized MAPK pathway that plays a critical role in cell proliferation and survival. Genetic alterations in this pathway are highly prevalent in human cancers and can lead to uncontrolled cell growth and tumor formation. The crosstalk between the RAF-MEK-ERK axis and other signaling pathways further enhances its proliferative potential in human cancers.

The role of ferroptosis mediated by NRF2/ERK-regulated ferritinophagy in CdTe QDs-induced inflammation in macrophage

Na Liu et al.

Summary: Cadmium telluride quantum dots (CdTe QDs) trigger inflammatory responses and activate macrophages in mice, and the mechanism behind the activation of macrophages to overexpress IL-1 beta and IL-6 is explored. The study reveals that CdTe QDs induce ferroptosis in macrophages. Activation of ferritinophagy through a decrease in NRF2 and phosphorylation of ERK1/2 plays a key role in initiating ferroptosis in macrophages.

Repression of the antiporter SLC7A11/glutathione/glutathione peroxidase 4 axis drives ferroptosis of vascular smooth muscle cells to facilitate vascular calcification

Yuanzhi Ye et al.

Summary: Vascular calcification is regulated by ferroptosis of vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) through the repression of the SLC7A11/GSH/GPX4 axis. Inhibition of ferroptosis reduces mineral deposition and osteogenic differentiation of VSMCs, providing a potential targeting strategy for vascular calcification in chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients.

Salidroside attenuates HALI via IL-17A-mediated ferroptosis of alveolar epithelial cells by regulating Act1-TRAF6-p38 MAPK pathway

Baoyue Guo et al.

Summary: This study investigated the role of IL-17A in the cell-cell communication between immune cells and AECII in HALI and explored the therapeutic effect of Salidroside on HALI. The results showed that IL-17A is associated with immune cell infiltration in HALI and contributes to ferroptosis of AECII through the Act1/TRAF6/p38 MAPK pathway. Additionally, Salidroside protects against HALI throughout the whole pathogenic process.

The latest advances in the reproductive toxicity of microcystin-LR

Shiyu Zhang et al.

Summary: MC-LR is an emerging environmental pollutant produced by cyanobacteria that poses a threat to wildlife and human health by damaging reproductive organs and causing trans-generational and developmental toxicity. The mechanisms of MC-LR-induced reproductive toxicity mainly include the inhibition of protein phosphatase activity and the induction of oxidative stress, with potential involvement of epigenetic modifications. Additional research is needed to further understand the estrogenic effects of MC-LR and its impact on reproductive health.
