Integrated multi-biomarker responses in Mozambique tilapia, Oreochromis mossambicus under acute and chronic Diazinon (R) exposures

Shubhajit Saha et al.

Summary: This study investigated the toxic effects of chronic exposure to Diazinon on haematological and biochemical endpoints in Oreochromis mossambicus. The results showed significant decreases in haemoglobin content, total red and white blood cells, and MCH levels in Diazinon-exposed fish compared to the control group. Blood glucose concentrations were significantly higher, while serum protein concentrations were significantly lower in the treated fish. Integrated indices indicated significant impairment in Oreochromis mossambicus under acute and chronic Diazinon exposure scenarios.

Screening of phthalate and non-phthalate plasticizers and bisphenols in Sicilian women's blood

Giuseppa Di Bella et al.

Summary: Plastic accumulation and degradation into microplastics is an environmental issue due to their widespread presence and release of intrinsic chemicals that can act as endocrine disruptors. Monitoring plastic additives in biological matrices, such as blood, can help understand the relationship between human exposure and health outcomes. This study analyzed the levels and frequencies of specific plasticizers in Sicilian women's blood of different ages, finding higher concentrations in younger females, possibly due to increased use of plastic products in daily life.

T. Angelin Swetha et al.

Summary: Plastics are crucial for food packaging, as they preserve food, ensure shelf life, and guarantee food safety. However, their extensive use has led to long-term environmental pollution. To address this, researchers and manufacturers are developing eco-friendly biodegradable polymers like polylactic acid (PLA). PLA, a compostable thermoplastic biopolymer, is renewable and can be used to produce various materials. This chapter focuses on food packaging techniques, waste in the food industry, classification of biopolymers, PLA synthesis, the importance of PLA properties in food packaging, and technologies for processing PLA in food packaging.

Fitness assessment of Mytilus galloprovincialis Lamarck, 1819 after exposure to herbicide metabolite propachlor ESA

Nikola Tresnakova et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the chronic effects of chloroacetanilide herbicide metabolites on non-target aquatic organisms. The results show that the herbicide exposure has time- and dose-dependent effects on the model organism Mytilus galloprovincialis, particularly in the accumulation in soft mussel tissue. Biochemical profiles and haemocyte viability were not affected, but the viability of digestive gland cells decreased. Histopathological observations revealed damages to gills and digestive gland. This study highlights the potential risk of chloroacetanilide herbicides and the accumulation of their metabolites in edible mussel tissues.
