On the significance of long-term trends in tree-ring N isotopes-The interplay of soil conditions and regional NOx emissions

Martine M. Savard et al.

Summary: As anthropogenic nitrogen emissions increase, it is important to develop natural archives to understand past natural process modifications. Tree-ring 815N values can be an indicator but its validity is still debated.

Impacts of climate and tree morphology on tree-ring stable isotopes in central Mongolia

Caroline Leland et al.

Summary: Recent climate extremes in Mongolia have sparked interest in studying past climate variability in north-central Asia. Tree-ring width records in Mongolia have been extensively studied as proxies for climate reconstruction, but the climate and environmental signals of tree-ring stable isotopes in this region still need further exploration.

First evidence of nanoparticle uptake through leaves and roots in beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) and pine (Pinus sylvestris L.)

Paula Ballikaya et al.

Summary: This study investigated the uptake and transport mechanisms of gold nanoparticles (Au-NPs) in European beech and Scots pine trees. The results showed that both tree species were capable of taking up and transporting Au-NPs to their stem. European beech exhibited higher uptake of Au-NPs, possibly due to its higher stomatal density and wood characteristics.

A high-temperature water vapor equilibration method to determine non-exchangeable hydrogen isotope ratios of sugar, starch and cellulose

Philipp Schuler et al.

Summary: This study tested the applicability of the hot vapor equilibration method for non-structural carbohydrates and successfully established an analytical protocol. The results showed reproducible δH-2(ne) values in sugars and starch from different sources, with variation among plant types, indicating potential for future research in using δH-2(ne) as a proxy for various environmental and physiological processes in plants.

Species variation in the hydrogen isotope composition of leaf cellulose is mostly driven by isotopic variation in leaf sucrose

Meisha Holloway-Phillips et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the δH-2 and δO-18 of leaf sucrose, leaf cellulose, and leaf and xylem water in multiple species for the first time. The results showed that the δH-2 of sucrose can explain 66% of the variation in cellulose δH-2, which is influenced by the H-2 enrichment of sucrose relative to leaf water. The study also found that hydrogen isotopic exchange in sugars is related to dark respiration and carbohydrate turnover time.

The unknown third - Hydrogen isotopes in tree-ring cellulose across Europe

V. Vitali et al.

Summary: This study presents the first comprehensive assessment of climatological and physiological information recorded by hydrogen isotope ratios in tree-ring cellulose. The study found that the strength of the delta H-2(c) climate signal varied across the continent and was stronger for Pinus than for Quercus, with different relationships with tree growth and hydrology. The recorded information by delta H-2(c) differs significantly from that of delta O-18(c) and has a stronger physiological component, providing new insights into trees' carbon allocation mechanisms and responses to stress conditions.

Impacts of smelter atmospheric emissions on forest nutrient cycles: Evidence from soils and tree rings

Lauriane Dinis et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of a smelter on nutrient cycles in surrounding forests by analyzing tree-ring series and soil element concentrations. It shows that the soil pH within 45 km of the smelter has gradually recovered since the late 1970s, with element bioavailability and root assimilation changing due to soil acidification. The research also suggests that summer temperatures partly control the elemental bioavailability to trees in soils, and identifies Zn and Mg tree-ring series as key environmental indicators of metal deposition from the smelter.

More than climate: Hydrogen isotope ratios in tree rings as novel plant physiological indicator for stress conditions

Marco M. Lehmann et al.

Summary: The analysis of stable carbon and oxygen isotopes in tree-rings is a common method to study past climatic conditions and tree physiological responses to environmental changes. While hydrogen isotopic signature in tree-rings is less utilized due to poor correlation with climate, recent studies have shown its potential in revealing physiological information during stressful periods, independently of biotic and abiotic factors.
