Response of ecosystem services to impervious surface changes and their scaling effects in Loess Plateau ecological Screen, China

Yiming Zhang et al.

Summary: The complexity and fragility of the Yellow River Basin ecosystem limit its economic growth and sustainable social development. In response, the Chinese government has established the Loess Plateau Ecological Screen to mitigate the negative ecological impacts. However, there is a lack of studies that quantify the effects of impervious surfaces on ecosystem services. This study explores the response of ecosystem services to changes in impervious surfaces and investigates the scale effect from 2000 to 2020.

Changwen Wei et al.

Summary: This research explores the synergies and trade-offs between different ecosystem services in the northern sand-stabilization belt, based on the gradient of precipitation and fractional vegetation cover. The study finds that synergies between ecosystem services increase with increasing precipitation and vegetation cover. Additionally, land use and vegetation cover have an impact on the trade-offs and synergies between ecosystem services.

Summary: This article analyzes the ecological maintenance status of Fuzhou city and provides a reference for its development as a national central city. The study focuses on land use data and applies the PSR model to construct an ecological security evaluation system. The results show improvements in ecological security overall, but local discrepancies still exist. The study highlights the main obstacle factors affecting ecological security in Fuzhou and provides decision support for ecological environment protection.

Ecological security assessment of Xilingol grassland in China using DPSIRM model

Zhenhua Dong et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the grassland ecological security in Xilingol League, Inner Mongolia, China, using the DPSIRM model, and found that the overall ecological security level in the area has increased from 2005 to 2015, with the western region being relatively insecure and the eastern region being more secure. The study also revealed a decreasing trend of ecological security level from west to east, and the unsafe and less safe areas tend to shift to the northeast.

Multiple stressors influencing the general eutrophication status of transitional waters of the Brazilian tropical coast: An approach utilizing the pressure, state, and response (PSR) framework

Ana Karoline Duarte dos Santos Sa et al.

Summary: Modeling approaches are useful for assessing eutrophication and stressors' effects on coastal ecosystems. The study revealed low nutrient dilution and high pressure in macrotidal estuaries, leading to high trophic status and seasonal eutrophication. High temperature, salinity, and dissolved oxygen intensified trophic conditions. Salinity, DIP, and Chl-a were identified as principal stressors for eutrophication. Future strategies should reduce anthropogenic contributions and improve trophic conditions in the studied estuary.

Ecosystem and Driving Force Evaluation of Northeast Forest Belt

Zhihong Liao et al.

Summary: The ecosystem in the Northeast Forest Belt (NFB) plays a crucial role in maintaining the ecological environment in Northeast China and the entire country. This study analyzed the spatio-temporal changes in ecological quality from 2005 to 2015 and identified the main driving factors behind these changes. The results showed that the ecosystem in the NFB was in a relatively good state as a whole, but some areas still required attention due to degradation. Land use/cover, climate, and human disturbance were identified as potential factors affecting ecosystem evolution in the NFB.

An Ecosystem Service Approach to Assessing Agro-Ecosystems in Urban Landscapes

Thais Thiesen et al.

Summary: Creating sustainable urban landscapes in light of growing population pressures requires interdisciplinary multi-functional solutions. Alternative agro-ecosystems such as food forests, permaculture gardens, and edible landscapes can address social, economic, and ecological goals simultaneously. However, there is a lack of comprehensive tools to assess the performance of these alternative agro-ecosystems.

Genetic diversity, population size, and population stability of common plant species in a Mongolian grassland

Naohiro I. Ishii et al.

Summary: The study found that genetic indices of multiple common plant species were not significantly correlated with the number of individuals or their stability in a local community. This lack of correlation may be attributed to species-specific identity and stabilization mechanisms related to the number of individuals.
