Relationship between soil 15N natural abundance and soil water content at global scale: Patterns and implications

Xiaoming Lai et al.

Summary: Investigating the relationship between soil nitrogen stable isotope (815N) and soil water content (SWC) can explain different controls of soil 815N in different regions. The study found an upward-concave relationship between soil 815N and SWC, with higher soil 815N at both the dry and wet ends. This relationship was inconsistent in different climate zones, with positive relationship in the Tropical zone and negative relationship in the Arid zone. It was also found that climatic factors rather than hydrological factors determined the low soil 815N in the Temperate, Cold, and Polar zones.

Mapping soil erodibility in southeast China at 250 m resolution: Using environmental variables and random forest regression with limited samples

Zhiyuan Tian et al.

Summary: The study mapped soil erodibility (K factor) using a random forest (RF) model and environmental variables, identifying relief, climate, land surface temperature, and vegetation indexes as important predictors. By optimizing the model and generating a digital map, the spatial resolution of the K factor was significantly improved, demonstrating the effectiveness of the mapping approach.

The effectiveness of digital soil mapping with temporal variables in modeling soil organic carbon changes

Ren-Min Yang et al.

Summary: The study found that incorporating temporal variables into soil organic carbon prediction models can improve their accuracy. Utilizing temporal changes in environmental factors can better explain the spatiotemporal variability of soil organic carbon, which is crucial for future predictions of soil organic carbon changes.

Vegetation creates microenvironments that influence soil microbial activity and functional diversity along an elevation gradient

Daniel Hernandez-Caceres et al.

Summary: Soil microbial activity and functional diversity are influenced by the type and diversity of montane plant species and their associated root traits, but soil physical and chemical properties are the main drivers.

SoilGrids 2.0: producing soil information for the globe with quantified spatial uncertainty

Laura Poggio et al.

Summary: SoilGrids generates global maps of soil properties using advanced technology and machine learning methods, incorporating soil observations and environmental factors to predict and analyze various soil properties worldwide. The research shows a good predictive performance for global soil properties, but also reveals the need for more soil observation data, especially in high-latitude regions.

Stable isotope signatures of soil nitrogen on an environmental-geomorphic gradient within the Congo Basin

Simon Baumgartner et al.

Summary: The availability of nitrogen in tropical forests varies greatly at regional and local scales. Different forest types and topographies exhibit distinct differences in nitrogen cycling, with montane forests showing relatively closed nitrogen cycles and lowland forests experiencing more open nitrogen cycles. Soil nitrogen isotope profiles are affected by slope gradients and erosive forces, highlighting the need for more comprehensive studies on nitrogen cycling in tropical forests.
