Effects of light intensity and spectral composition on the growth and physiological adaptation of Acroporid corals

Ryotaro Izumi et al.

Summary: Light conditions (photoperiod, intensity, and spectrum) affect coral growth. Longer photoperiods and higher light intensities promote coral growth. Changes in light spectrum affect symbiotic algae density and chlorophyll content, but not growth. Light accelerates coral calcification through photosynthesis by algal symbionts.

Day-night cycle as a key environmental factor affecting coral-Symbiodiniaceae symbiosis

Sanqiang Gong et al.

Summary: Interpreting day-night oscillations, this study found that two coral holobionts showed clear patterns in photo-physiology, Symbiodiniaceae cell density, and gene transcription. During the day, these holobionts had lower photosystem II efficiency but higher Symbiodiniaceae cell density compared to nighttime. Genes related to circadian rhythm, symbiosis, and nitrogen metabolism were up-regulated, while immunity-related genes were down-regulated during the day. Moreover, one holobiont showed more pronounced day-night oscillations in various aspects, indicating species-specific patterns. This study provides valuable insights into how coral holobionts adapt to diurnal environmental changes.

Heat stress destabilizes symbiotic nutrient cycling in corals

Nils Radecker et al.

Summary: The altered nutrient cycling during heat stress is found to be a primary driver of the functional breakdown of coral-algal symbiosis. Energy limitation and altered symbiotic nutrient cycling are key factors in the early heat stress response, directly contributing to the breakdown of the coral-algal symbiosis.
