Inclusion of biotic variables improves predictions of environmental niche models

Fabrice Stephenson et al.

Summary: This study examines the impact of biotic variables on species distribution models (SDMs). The results show that the inclusion of biotic variables can improve the model performance for both species, especially for Macomona. This research is important for predicting impacts of climate change in unsampled areas. By integrating ecological theories on how species interactions can alter species distributions across environmental gradients, the classic SDMs can be enhanced.

Assessing statistical downscaling in Argentina: Daily maximum and minimum temperatures

Rocio Balmaceda-Huarte et al.

Summary: This study performed empirical statistical downscaling (ESD) to simulate daily maximum and minimum temperatures in different climatic regions of Argentina. The results showed that different ESD models had varying levels of skill, and the predictor set and model configuration were key factors. The downscaling models were able to capture the general characteristics of temperature, with better performance in minimum temperature. However, regions with complex topography posed a challenge for capturing local variability. The extrapolation skill of the models in warm conditions was similar to that in the cross-validated period. The results of this study provide a reference for future ESD developments and comparisons in Argentina.

Species stress tolerance and community competitive effects drive differences in species composition between calcareous and siliceous plant communities

David Nemer et al.

Summary: The study found that dominant species from siliceous and calcareous soils exhibit different responses to competition and stress, supporting the trade-off between stress tolerance and competitive response proposed by the physical hypothesis. Siliceous species showed lower stress tolerance and higher water pressure on calcareous soils, while competition had a greater impact on survival of calcareous species. Differences in stress tolerance among species played a more important role than the competitive effect of neighbors in driving species composition.

Annual air temperature variability and biotic interactions explain tundra shrub species abundance

Jonathan von Oppen et al.

Summary: The study found that shrub species and functional groups exhibit highly variable responses to both abiotic and biotic environmental variation. Annual air temperature variability was identified as the most important abiotic explanatory variable for shrub abundance, while functional community composition and graminoid abundance were the most influential biotic factors.
